cmonurz Was interesting to hear the difference in tone taken by Hodgson in response to questions about Terry/Ferdinand (non-committal) and Rooney (definitely going to the Euros). I’d lean towards Hodgson springing a few surprises in the squad.

And LOL @ leaving Rooney out of the squad. He’s our best all-round forward since Shearer and brings more to the team than most of our options combined.

Of course he is, no doubt about that.

When he wants to be. (And when he's still on the pitch.)

cmonurz Negative briefing continues, BBC says Hodgson will be the first English England manager never to have played professional football. Presumably Sven is the only other England manager not to have played professionally? Or did he play in some lower leagues?

and of course it turns out he has played professional football :!:

Not looking to make excuses for Rooney, but no attacking player performs at their highest during every game though.

The bigger the game the better the opposition and the harder it is to perform for the whole team. Rooney does alright and isn't there just as a one man team.

He's let us down at times by losing his head, but the majority of those occassions the team around him, or the manager in some cases, have let him down too. He usually loses his head when his performance is going well and quite often that's when he's played upfront on his own or the team are incapable of getting him the ball.

Rooney hasn't been booked all season, for Utd - so he has certainly calmed down

I heard that the other night. Quite an amazing stat considering.

Perhaps missing the start of the Euro's and getting his baldness corrected really has settled him down a bit.

Or that refs just don't bother clamping down on dissent.

Great to see The Sun wading in with their most appalling headline since "Bonkers Bruno Locked Up".

Why do people still buy this rag?

At yesterdays Press Conference, Hodgson was asked how he was going to solve the problem of getting Terry and Rio to play together again; he said that he was planning on speaking to them both.

Here's an idea Roy - when you ring them up, just say, "Thanks for all your efforts Lads, but I'm looking to freshen the squad up from now on, so you are both dropped from the squad".

There you go, no more problem.

The irony of yesterday's press conference was that David Bernstein rolled his "r"s in the same way as Roy was.
Until Brooking spoke (inanely) it was as if all of them at the FA and involved with England had to speak that way.
BTW The Sun headline was dreadful and a caller on Talksport suggested that if the "funny" headline had been about gender or race all hell would have been let loose but as it was about disability somehow it is o.k.
I agree with him.

Extended-Phenotype The ONLY way England are ever going to progress is if we dump the woeful Old Guard who simply have not been able to perform in a team where they aren’t unquestioningly adored, and that dumping is well over due.

England need to start afresh. John Terry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand need to be let go so we can cultivate some new stars.

The problem is, if Hodgson does this he’ll be damned. If he keeps them, we will continue to be sh/t, and he’ll be damned. I get the feeling he’s walked into a war he can’t win.

Agree - the old guard, who are supposedly world class players, have consistently not performed at major tournaments and I'd certainly ditch Terry now who is a divisive character and there are others as good now in his position.

That's one reason why Hodgson is a better choice than Redknapp. Throughout his career Harry's game has been to sign well established players, so don't think he'd quickly ditch the "golden generation" and he's been clever in always getting the funds he wants from chairmen - even when obvious on the outside the club cannot afford the players (eg Crouch and Defoe at Pompey)

Harry plays the press well, which is why they love him, but if you analyse his track record, and the state of clubs when he's left them, he aint that great.

LOL @ the Sun claiming "Wossy" on their side (therefore implying it's OK for all to tease anyone who can't pronounce their arse)

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4294202/Jonathan-Ross-Roy-Hodgson-speech-impediment-row-is-ruddy-ridiculous.html

Only for the elderly-taunting chat show host to then tweet

Just had some guys from the Sun at my front door asking what I made of their Woy of the Wovers style front page. Life's too short....

I haven't seen it but I didn't support them. Just said it didn't bother me when people made jokes about my speech. And it doesn't.

F/ck Hodgeson, can you be England manager? Give Lamps and Gerrard the boot too, while you are at it.
