Man Friday
Extended-Phenotype The ONLY way England are ever going to progress is if we dump the woeful Old Guard who simply have not been able to perform in a team where they aren’t unquestioningly adored, and that dumping is well over due.

England need to start afresh. John Terry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand need to be let go so we can cultivate some new stars.

The problem is, if Hodgson does this he’ll be damned. If he keeps them, we will continue to be sh/t, and he’ll be damned. I get the feeling he’s walked into a war he can’t win.

Add Rooney to the list. We all know he can be brilliant but usually either goes missing (esp. big games) or is just a liability. On the whole, we actually seem to play better without him. Personally, I wish his suspension had been kept at 3 matches.

FCK ME!!! I said this PAGES ago and other than people saying Rooney was a oxf*rd brilliant footballer - no-one else batted an eyelid.

He is. Anyone who genuinely thinks he should be dropped from the England squad should be banned from football and made to endure an entire season of hockey with Spacey.

I also dislike people, esp the media, taking the p out of him for not being able to pronounce his letter "R".

And going back to Rooney - he's like a spoilt little brat. He lashed out and has been banned for 2 of our Euro2012 games - so I wouldn't even bother taking him. He may be a good footballer - but he plays for himself, not England.

Rooney is an annoying enigma. The flashes of brilliance he shows for Man U and to a less extent England, shows what a valuable player he could be. Yet if the setup isn’t perfect, he is more detrimental to the side than beneficial.

I don’t think England have the players to harness Rooney, and in a unrehearsed team of players varying in standards, form and confidence, we can’t afford players running around doing what they want.

As hard as it is, even if he IS our best player, I sometimes think England would work better with a more conventional and disciplined striker.

Let’s face it, Rooney was at his best for England (2004) when he was just that; a conventional striker in a 4-4-2.

Yeah, lets leave Rooney at home and take Danny Welbeck or Bobby Zamora - or better still...........Andy Carroll

Let's try and forget about 2004. He was carrying an injury, he was worried about certain soon-to-be-public facts about his private life, everybody was playing rubbish, whatever.

Trouble is all that we have of these:

Extended-Phenotype a more conventional and disciplined striker.

are just quite rubbish.

The very idea that, at a time when we have a historic dearth of forward talent, we would drop a guy close to being top-scorer in the prem, who is also creative, and has years of experience playing at the highest level, and who, despite accusations of hot-headedness, had so far gone the season with a single yellow card, is perverse. (Yes, I said perverse. I knew you'd like that.)

Even if he's only going to play one game.

No, you are right. We should take up a place to play him for just one game in which he will avoid the goal, wander around the pitch wherever he likes and then batter someone.

Still more than Welbeck, Zamora & Carroll will do in 3 games
