I just hope we can sign him, he looks brilliant. WCABP though.

To be fair, you look at how Arsenal fans rely on Oxlade-Chaimberlin to turn at game around now when he was a League 1 player last season so you never know if Antonio could be effective in the Prem...

I'd love it if Reading could sign Antonio, he's young and hungry, definitely got the 'Reading' DNA and has proven hat he can play in front of a big crowd. Norwich and Southampton proved that it's not a big step from League 1 to the premiership but I can see some top teams in for him. WCBAP but definitely worth trying our luck with.

Alternatively, let's ship him out because like Cummings, Long, Federici, Pearce...he hasn't made an immediate impact.

I have never understood the negativity towards Antonio from many on here. Whenever I have seen him play he looks like a talented young player who is learning his trade and it has come as no surprise to me that he has done well at Sheff Wed.

This summer is decision time, however, as he only has a year left on his contract.

Personally I would like us to extend it for two more years and then loan him back to Sheff Wed (they seem to love him there) for the season. A season in the Championship would do him the world of good and hopefully he could step up to the PL in the future.

In the meantime congratulations to him. There cannot be many payers that have won a Championship medal and League 1 runners up medal in the same season.

Andrew, isn't he contracted until 2014?

Hi FL

No 2013 unless it has been extended again but not announced - see link below.

I was thinking the same thing. I definitely think we'd be mugs to let him go.

We have to plan two-ways. Plan for going up and staying up BUT ALSO plan for a first-season
or second-season relegation after which you lose a few of the top players and need to create a good Champ side to challenge.

We are not going to compete in the Prem on sheer class and ball-playing ability unless we can get one utter-class
signing like a Gylfi and basically play it tight and hope the star gets the points.

More likely we are going to work our socks off and hope for goals on the break
from our two wingers or goals from set-pieces (Harte) or perhaps long-throws?

Antonio is improving. He has stood out in a League 1 promotion winning side, which surely
suggests he has recently played top-third Championship level (and as said, is still improving)

IMO, if we don't bring him back in (I think I would) we should draw up a what-if contract that stops us
being stiffed if we loan him for a year - a contract that allows us to loan him until Xmas 2012 or for the season
at Championship wages (which Wednesday pay) but has a clause that allows us to take up an option, rates
already agreed). That way he develops, but if he really becomes a Championship "star winger" or better
we still have him until 2014/5

Cheers. I think viewtopic.php?f=1&t=111629&start=20#p3293743 needs amending.

At four years in to his Reading career I think we've gone past the immediate impact stage.

It's not a big step from L1 to the Championship either, but he hasn't looked effective at that level yet.

And as Sandman says, it's not like he hasn't had the opportunities at this level. Brian sees him in training every day, and rather than keep him as back up, he sent him out on loan and brought Cywka in. What does that tell you?

(00) (01) 019 Minutes 2009/10
(02) (19) 461 Minutes 2010/11
(02) (04) 199 Minutes 2011/12

(04) (24) 679 Minutes, in 3 seasons, the equivalent of less than 8 full games.

So anyone saying he's been given a chance at RFC to show his worth is talking out of his jacksie

Playing for other clubs this season, tho' = 2,240 Minutes for 8 Goals and 5 Assists

That's a goal every 280 Minutes (good for a winger) and a Major Contribution every 172 Minutes

2,605 Minutes 16 Major Contributions one every 157 Minutes 03 Goals 13 Assists KEBE
2,240 Minutes 13 Major Contributions one every 172 Minutes 08 Goals 05 Assists Antonio (League One)
1,733 Minutes 08 Major Contributions one every 217 Minutes 04 Goals 04 Assists HRK
3,452 Minutes 14 Major Contributions one every 247 Minutes 05 Goals 09 Assists McAnuff

His goal-scoring is excellent for a winger

Compare him to our other wingers.

280 Minutes per Goal ANTONIO (League One)
433 Minutes per Goal HRK
690 Minutes per Goal McANUFF
868 Minutes per Goal KEBE

Kebe and McAnuff at at their peak. HRK and Antonio will get better.

And as Sandman says, it's not like he hasn't had the opportunities at this level.

Same false issues as we had with Shane Long.

A smattering of sub appearances and just four
league starts in 3 seasons. Hardly a real chance.

But he has done well when given a run by other teams

Yes, well done Snowball, but in league 1, not at our level.

You're always saying how Brian knows best, well doesn't that apply here also? He quite clearly doesn't think that Antonio is good enough to make an impact for us at the moment, why else would he have sent him out on loan and brought Cywka in?

Fair point, Brian hasn't lead us wrong yet. He clearly knows far better than us, but what it boils down to is that the kid's had an excellent run in the division below us, and based on that alone, he's worth at least holding onto for another season or two. Maybe on loan, maybe not, but there's no doubting that he's shown some class.

Many possibilities. One being he is looking at Antonio long-term
and Cwyka was an easy-fit stop-gap 4th winger cover going cheap
and was expendable (as it turned out) while Antonio need
developing either for RFC or to make some money as a transfer.

Elliott To be fair, you look at how Arsenal fans rely on Oxlade-Chaimberlin to turn at game around now when he was a League 1 player last season so you never know if Antonio could be effective in the Prem...

Ask some Southampton fans who they'd rather have back. I imagine you'd get a similar response if you asked Reading fans whether they'd rather re-sign Gylfi or Matejovsky.

Additionally, they're completely different styles of player, and Antonio is worse despite being significantly older.

I think Antonio might be a good Championship winger one day, but a) we need to be looking at players with the potential to be even better, like Taylor, Obita, and Tanner, and b) he'll only become that good if he has regular minutes at that level, and he's most likely to get that if we give him a permanent transfer. The £750k fee is incredible if true (we paid a similar amount for Bobby Convey who is the best left winger we've ever had).

Look at James Henry. Looked lively whenever he played for the seniors here, including a hat-trick against Stoke, and outperformed Gylfi in the reserves and youth team. It didn't look like he'd get regular games, so we sold him two years ago and got a good fee. Last season he set up more goals for Millwall than any of our players bar Long, and this year he's set up as many as Kebe and only one fewer than McAnuff. Would that have happened if he'd not been sold for regular game time? Almost certainly not.

Antonio is 22, the same age as Henry. He's performed to about the same level in a lower league. Personally I think it would be best for all three parties if we took the tremendous fee we have been offered, Sheffield Wednesday get their best winger back, and Antonio gets regular secure playing time.

So you admit that Brian is looking to sell him, and that he's right to? Good, thank you.
