southbank1871 I think it’s the blind faith that Liverpool fans seem to put in Dalglish that can be annoying.

But that's what being a passionate, partisan football fan is about. No-one thinks Roy Keane was just a poor man's Phil Parkinson, except us idiot Reading fans. If we can't idolise anyone any more then we're just the blind consumers the multi-billionaire owners want us to be.

Surely no-one really thought that though :|

There’s having loyalty and passion and then there’s foolish blind faith. All teams have an element of this amongst their fans I’m sure, there were plenty of Reading fans who wouldn’t accept any criticism of Coppell, as a result of his achievements with us. It seems Liverpool have more than their fair share of these fans though and it’s the assumption by these fans that it somehow makes them better than the rest of us that is irritating.

At times I think Spearing has looked half decent. I'm probably in the minority with that though.

Why him over the others? Because he's a defensive player and covers more ground make tackles and holding the midfield. Last night, from what I saw of it, Chelsea were not really going at them and so it was a lot easier for the Liverpool midfield to keep the ball and to get it back cheaply from a Chelsea side who couldn't pass it.

Spearing, despite having a bit of a shocker in the cup final, wins the ball back very well.

Having a midfielder who really struggles to retain possession is a big problem for a team who aspires to be in the top four though.

He may be able to tackle but he gives it away with his first touch very often.

And with Gerrard who is equally likely to give it away Liverpool have most of this season been handicapped in midfield.

To say Liverpool have missed Lucas Leiva would be a massive understatement, he does everything Spearing does, just much more effectively. Read recently that Lucas still has more tackles this season than any other Liverpool player, despite getting injured in November.

Agree, he's not up to the quality you'd expect to be starting week-in week-out in a top 4 team, although I don't think he does give it away that much, certainly not when I've watched Liverpool over the last few months.

He obviously did in the cup final, and he's certainly no Mascherano, Alonso or Lucas, but I don't think he's as bad as being made out.

It’s lucky he’s good at getting the ball back as his second touch is usually a tackle. With a midfield of Spearing, Henderson and Gerrard in the cup final, they were always going to struggle.

No doubt they've missed him. I'd imagine that over the summer they saw the Liverpool midfield being a base of Adam and Lucas with Gerrard roaming infront of them. They'd then have had Henderson as backup to Gerrard and used much less frequently in the middle of the pitch where he's not been quite good enough.

Long term I'm sure the idea was that they'd see Henderson as potentially the next Gerrard/Lampard type English attacking midfielder. He's nowhere near that level yet of course!

Given he’s done alright for two years in Serie A, you have to wonder if Aquilani could come back and be another option in midfield for them.

Spot on Hoops.
Spearing was the driving force of Liverpool's successful youth team and despite the punished pass in the FA Cup final he is generally a good passer of the ball and a gritty tackler.
With Lucas out for the whole of this past season he has had chances and (like Shelvey,Henderson and Kelly) he is a young player who MIGHT do better with time.
These players are younger than Church and Robson-Kanu and are playing at and judged by the top level.

Looking at our top two clubs there are very few similarly young players who are regulars and the same goes for lesser clubs like Newcastle,Chelsea and Everton.
It's a difficult job giving these younger players a chance to prove themselves-look at Smalling and Jones at Man Utd who both cost quite a bit and are very much unproven and have only made minor contributions this season and Fergie brings them in for a few games and then leaves them out so they get some experience but are far from regular starters.
The shame is that we in England are desperate for new blood in the England side and the likes of Smalling,Jones,Wellbeck and Wilshere are hyped to a level that they might reach but have not yet done so.

Once in a while along comes an Owen,Gerrard or a Rooney and they get in and stay in from a very early age but these are few and far between as was the late, great Duncan Edwards who might well have become the greatest English player of all time.

What a ridiculous suggestion when there is still another League game to come.
BTW why didn't you put the score up last night as the goals poured in as you normally do in your role as Mr Teletext?
Maybe you were one of those few loyal supporters that made it up to Anfield last night so you couldn't.

Agree with a lot of that. I do think wellbeck looks the part though tbh.

I'm not sure what's gone on in the preceeding 78 pages but I'd have to say that Liverpool are, all things considered, probably my least favourite football team in all of England.

How is it one group of people manage to be so utterly, relentlessly blinkered and obnoxious whilst another group from exactly the same city manage to be decent and likeable?

I've never been too keen on them but the racism stuff this year was an absolute nadir for me.

Its funny cos only Victor, Cmonurz and Spacey seem to stick up for them (maybe SF sometimes).....whereas everyone else dislikes them, yet WE are the ones that need to grow up
