You are the one who is laughably wrong. Do you remember which two midfield players we played behind Gylfi under McDermott? Howard and Tabb. Hardly the most defensive of pairings.

And what about the 4-4-2 that was tearing up the Championship?

Also from the side you are talking about we're missing Mills (ball playing CB), Griifin in his pomp, Bertrand, and Long.

I personally don't believe it's worth changing a successful system (one that has proven to be more successful than the one you are pining for)...if you disagree then fair enough.

1. Tabb plays as a holding midfielder.
2. Howard was played as a holding midfielder, which was the source of some grief.
3. We still played 4-2-3-1, so what’s your point?
4. I said Gylfi tore up the championship. Not three numbers separated by hyphens.
5. You have a very odd recollection of Mills, and Gorkss is twice the footballer he was.
6. What is so tactically special about Griffin?
7. Aren’t we looking to sign a new LB?
8. Aren’t we looking to sign a new forward?
9. Why couldn’t ALF, Roberts or Hunt work up front alone?
10. Why change? I reckon Reading + Gylfi > Reading – Gyfli, and the new league requires a new system.

If we are to establish ourselves in the Premier League we will have to have players who can play more than just one system and Gylfi is such a good player we could not have afforded to disregard signing him if it was possible.

However from everything I have read Gylfi seems very keen on making a permanent move to Swansea and I can only see him not going there if he has a chance to go to a significantly bigger Club.

Extended-Phenotype 1. Tabb plays as a holding midfielder.
Far more of a ball player than Ledge. He was a winger when we signed him.

2. Howard was played as a holding midfielder, which was the source of some grief.
He might have been played as a holding midfielder, my point is that he's a completely different kind of player to those that we currently have playing there.

3. We still played 4-2-3-1, so what’s your point?
My point is that those '2' were ball playing defensive midfielders, ala Pirlo (although obviously nowhere near as good), and we'd need to have similar players in there to be as successful if we were to revert back to it.

4. I said Gylfi tore up the championship. Not three numbers separated by hyphens.
Fine, he may have tore up the championship, but the TEAM didn't. The TEAM were champions playing without Gylfi, in a 4-4-2.

5. You have a very odd recollection of Mills, and Gorkss is twice the footballer he was.
Gorkss is twice the defender, but as a footballer? LOL.

6. What is so tactically special about Griffin?
He was very comfortable on the ball. Cummings is not.

7. Aren’t we looking to sign a new LB?
No idea, but if we do it will cost a fair bit of money.

8. Aren’t we looking to sign a new forward?
See previous point.

9. Why couldn’t ALF, Roberts or Hunt work up front alone?
Alf - Small, not particularly quick, no presence in the air. Hunt - Not smart enough in terms of movement, lacks pace. Roberts - Admitted the main reason he came to Reading was because we play 4-4-2.

10. Why change? I reckon Reading + Gylfi > Reading – Gyfli, and the new league requires a new system
Reading + Gylfi =/= play-offs, Reading - Gylfi = Champions. Hmmmm

£7m is far too much to spend on one player. I don't think we should break our current top transfer record of about £2.5m, as no one who we've signed for a lot of money has been much good. We should stick to the current Reading way.

PistolPete I am SHOCKED that no top 6 team has decided to buy Gylfi. Shocked.

Spurs could sell Modric for £30m and buy Gylfi for £7.5. Manchester United could give Gylfi one season to learn from Scholes, Arsenal are crying out for a player to feed RVP through the middle like Silva does for Man City, Liverpool simply need class, Chelsea are considering spending £30+ million on Lucas - an unproven attacking midfielder. IT JUST DOESN"T MAKE SENSE that a player, who has PROVEN his ability as Hoffenheim young player of the season and as Swansea's stand out player in a team that played top 6 style football, would be ignored.

He has a great attitude, he is at the perfect age and would be on lowish wages. I am lost for words.

Am I gutted? Yes! Not because we haven't signed him, he's out our league, but that Swansea will be the team that takes advantage - we lost by the width of a post to them 2 seasons ago and now look at them

I can only take solace in the fact that just because an article is written in another language it doesn't make it true!

pea Lol, it doesn't work because we've always called it the Gylfi formation and Brian tried numerous players in the role once he left and eventually gave up and brought Ledge in to play 4-4-2. The reason we haven't be able to play it is because we haven't had Gylfi or a like for like replacement, not because the rest of the team can't play the other roles, which aren't much different tbh

Okay, let me ask you this.

Were we more successful playing 4-5-1 with Gylfi, or 4-4-2 with Roberts?

And ignore the brilliant CB partnership, Gorkss in for the liability Mills, big step up from Pearce
improvement in Federici, the second coming of Harte, the effect of Elwood etc

i dont think just because other expensive players havent work will mean that none of them ever will

I do see your point, we're bound to get lucky one day. I just quite like the fact we have such a low transfer record compared to everyone else and don't see a need to change that at the moment.

I agree with you apart from point 9. I don't think any of our strikers can effectively play the one up top - especially in this league.

Look, Tabb and Howard were playing as holding mids. Jem and Legs ARE holding mids, playing as holding mids. I can’t recall any examples of the former being better passers than the latter. In my mind, the latter are the better pairing, and it would seem McD agrees with me, hence them being selected practically every game this season while Pirlo1 and Pirlo2 rot on the bench if they are lucky. If you are saying Gylfi would play better with Tabb and Howard, two players who couldn’t suck a game from McD’s cock, then I think you are mental.

Secondly, irrespective of our 4-4-2 winning the league, in a 4-5-1 the previous season, Gylfi worked. Therefore I see no reason to suggest Gylfi wouldn’t work again, and the few changes in personnel I believe would enhance rather than degrade that.

Happy to be corrected, but in terms of ability I really don’t see enough difference between Gorkss and Mills to validate your point that 4-5-1 is out of reach because Matt Mills is a slightly better passer.

Again, the difference between Griffin and Cummings doesn’t really eliminate an entire formation.

You don’t believe Reading are already on the look out for a LB and striker?

You think comparing this season with the previous one is a fair measure of which system may work best in the Premier League?

Gorkss is immeasurably better than Mills both as a footballer and a man.

Quite. That's what I thought. But apparently Gorkss can't pass a football and Mills is a world class playmaker.

If there was one player I'd have been happy for us to spunk £7m or £8m on it would have been Gylfi. If there was one signing we could have made it would have been him for me.

Very miffed we didn't sign him. But good luck to him at Swansea, I can't see him staying there more than a year or two. He's way too good for the likes of them and us long term.

Couldn't care less if we'd need to change the system, or players around him, a bit to fit him in (we're going to have to do that anyway in order to compete in the Premier League). Watching Sigurdsson back in a Reading team would make games much more exciting and entertaining again and we'd have a better player back in our side.

If Swansea do manage to sign him and we haven't made an attempt to bring him here (formally or informally) then I'd be both disappointed and surprised. If none of the top/bigger sides do the same then I'd be amazed.
