Update from maffff (very reliable)

maffff Still on international duty.... apparently that's the main reason in his delay (or what he's saying whilst he gives it a little while to see if anyone else comes in for him). He's asked a couple of questions about the contract offered but it's been fairly basic actually, very positive so far and he seems broadly happy. Has agreed to come straight to Reading when he returns to the UK to have a medical and talk in detal.

He's keener that I would have expected given interest in previous windows. I can see this having legs.

Apparently we're paying just over £2.5m, so a new club record fee (for now).

Very highly rated. Newcastle were keen back in Jan. Wigan agreed a fee but not terms with the player, also in Jan. For that money he sounds like he's worth a go!

Doubt it'll be that much if we do sign him, they only got £3m for Sordell in January when prices are generally higher and Mariappa only has a year left on his contract.

He's played a lot of games for his age, including half a season in the Premier League when he was a teenager (at right back). He's looked pretty decent these past couple of seasons, so i'd be happy with him signing.

Little bit short for a centre back 5ft 10"

He's come on a lot recently, similar to Alex Pearce but with more match experience. I think he'll be a solid CB at Premier League level and if he keeps progressing the way he has he could outgrow us at that level even, definitely has the right attitude.

I've heard the same thing about Church. He should be ready for the Championship in 2045.

He is short but IIRC he (like similar smaller players like Hunt and Long)has good arial ability and a good spring and is a determined sort.
I would expect him to challenge Gorkss and Pearce for a starting place and not just be (like Connolly being the new Bryn) a back-up player.
There aren't many big centre forwards around in the Premier League other than Carroll,Ba,Adebayor and Crouch so mobility is probably more important than height.
Incidentally a clear-out of Morrison,Antonio,HRK and Church plus some Manset money could give us a significant amount towards this transfer and maybe a bit left over.
BTW I hope that we don't go for too many just to fill the squad out but rather that we go for players likely to improve on the promoted squad and start games like McCleary.

No thanks. We already have "hungry" players we now need to add the quality that could make this more than the one season odyssey it's shaping up to be with signings like this guy and McCleary.

Oh good. The mindless negativity has started early this time round.

We actually paid £1m for Mills. The rest was based on promotion to the PL.

Do we still have to pay that to Donny? Even though he's gone? :?

We have Cummings,Pearce, Karacan, Kanu, McCarthy, Andersenand Sheppard with Morrison and Manset returning as well. Marriapa is no better than what we already have and hasn't got the sufficient quality required to help us stay in the PL.

It's not about negativity it's about getting the club to realise how great they can be. They don't know their own potential and by encouraging signings like this you people are bringing them down.
