DIRECTOR of football Nick Hammond hasn’t ruled out Reading making a big-name signing this summer.
Sources close to the club have told the Reading Post that Royals do have a genuine interest in Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Jermain Defoe, while Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole, who spent last season on loan at Lille, has also been linked with a move to Madejski Stadium.
Hammond and manager Brian McDermott have already brought in winger Garath McCleary on a free transfer from Nottingham Forest and they will no doubt want a prolific striker signed up for the Premier League campaign next season to bolster their chances of survival.
Hammond said: “If we sign a big-name player for the right reasons, then great.
“With the new owner that we have coming in I’m sure we will be linked with some big names too.
“And if we sign someone who isn’t on anyone else’s radar and they’re right for us, then that’s great also.”
Defoe’s £60,000-per-week wages could prove difficult for Reading.
And with Harry Redknapp’s Spurs losing out on a £35million windfall in the Champions League, it is unlikely they would sell an international of his calibre on the cheap.
“I’ve never said I want to leave, I’ve just said I want to play,” said 29-year-old Defoe, who is likely to be in demand from clubs all over Europe.
“As a forward you just want to get some sort of rhythm and a run in the team. That wasn’t the case towards the end of the season.
“I’m just going to see what happens. I’m going to concentrate on England and Euro 2012. The most important thing for me is scoring goals and that’s when I’m at my happiest.”
And although Anton Zingarevich’s £25million buyout of Reading has still not been approved by the Premier League – with the fit and proper person’s test still ongoing – Hammond is confident that any transfer activity won’t be affected.
“I don’t anticipate that,” added Hammond when asked if the delayed deal could cause Royals problems in the market.
“Me and Brian have spoken at length with Anton and Sir John Madejski over the past few weeks and hopefully the takeover should be sorted soon.”

YateleyRoyal As has been said before, I doubt this will happen until Spurs keep Adebayor, sign another striker and extend Saha's contract...
