Don't get all the Shorey hate, but then I guess that's because it comes from the usual suspects. Did well here and is still better than Harte, probably not worth it given his age now though.

SpaghettiHoop From the Guardian:

Reading's bid for Colombia midfielder Carlos Sanchez is on the verge of collapse over his £40,000-a-week demands. The Royals have the day's busiest scouting department, having not only identified Bordeaux's full-back Mattieu Chalme as a potential target but also run the rule over West Brom's former Reading ace Nicky Shorey and encouraged the club to compete with West Ham and Aston Villa for Norwich's £6m-rated wantaway striker Grant Holt.

I'd take Holt in a soddign heartbeat!!!

Shorey can kiss my arse.

rollsy Could not have jumped ship fast enough.

How many years was he at the club?

He'd be an excellent signing.

7 years as an RFC player and still only 31 years old.
He'd be decent cover. Good 3 years younger than Ian Harte.

22 games in league and cup (plus 3 from the bench).
Do you know how to use the internet?

And he's widely recognised as one of our best ever players and an important part of our most successful period. But he's tarnished that with the way he left. He's done bugger all since he left and we'd do much better to look elsewhere than bring back billy big bollocks like him, Hunt or Mills. All of which can do one as far as I'm concerned.

Not tarnished for me. But then, whether I'm justified in doing so or not, I take all stories on here of behind-the-scenes shenanigans and attitude-issues with a pinch of salt*.

If he returns then I suggest everyone else does the same because there is no way the club would have anyone back here who has caused problems in the past.

* Except those featuring Leroy Lita.

I bit harsh I think. He seems to remember the club and fans more fondly.

Does anyone remember what the undisclosed fee was rumoured to be?

So do I, but when they tie in with what I'm seeing and are so numerous I tend to go with them. I agree there's no way the club would have anyone like that back, which is why I'm confident we won't be signing Shorey. I also don't think he'd be a particularly good signing now even ignoring the troubles and the never go back rule.

I'm sure he does remember his time here fondly. He won the league with a points record and finished 8th in the Prem, he's not done as well since. Sometimes you only realise what you've got when it's gone.

Having someone find out for me > finding out myself

While you're here, how was his form last season? I imagine not great considering he was released.

Still think he would be a great signing on a free and good first choice left back for next season.. however, considering we have a bit of money are there realistic, better, younger, options out there?

I would take him, still at a good age, quality set peices, and a free transfer. And despite peoples opinion on him, he loves our club

Think it was 3 million. Not a bad return for 25 grand and played 300 games for the club. Can't remember to many bad ones in amongst that lot. His dad still works for the club, and I believe he has genuine affection for the club. Would be happy if he returned.

£3M was a good return (if true).

Think I'm with Ian Royal on not wanting him back, but BMcD knows best.

Shorey was a total c++t to this club in his final season here and whilst Cheeselog may be too thick to tell the difference between loss of form and no longer giving a sh*t, until the player signs on elsewhere I'll be praying the same does not apply to Brian McDermott.

It was no secret that Shorey wanted to leave after we got relegated, and let's be honest, who could blame him. He had played for England and did well in the top division so was justified in wanting to stay there.

Whether or not he behaved badly and had a bad attitude, only those at the club will know the truth, and even if he was not a "happy camper" people can change.

If he can perform to the level we know he can, then he would be a great addition to the squad.
