Smallest away attendance

by Norfolk Royal » 07 Jun 2012 11:17

Remember going to Hartlepool away circa 1976. Certainly had one coach going there but when people got in the ground I never saw another Reading fan again.

Quite common in those days for away fans not to have a section so they just melted away.

We took something like 25 to an LDV tie at Swansea round about 1990.

I used to work with a Torquay fan years ago who twice claimed to have been the only away fan in attendance. They were midweek games at Wrexham and Peterboro in the mid 80s, when Torquay were right down the bottom of Div 4 pretty much every year. Thats skillz.

Stockport away in 1998 lost 5-1, away attendance was about 40 as I recall.

We'll never manage that while Chris Collinson and Paul Black are still going.

It was pissing down with rain, most of us headed for the stand.

Kudos to anyone who remained on the open terrace that day!

Swansea Away - 1992 perhaps - Uwe Hartenberger with a late equaliser. Severn Bridge got closed - i managed to get over before that happened but i dont think many made it in the ground that Friday night!!

Halifax away on a friday night around '83. Sanchez scored the winner, and there were not many fans at all let alone Reading fans. I brought 3-4 mates Donny Rovers mates that boosted it a bit..

Chester at Moss Rose, Macclesfield on a cold and wet Tuesday night in 90(?). Official attendance of 631 and there could not have been more than forty or so Reading fans. Lost 1-0 and a totally miserable experience.

I was there that night, didn't a steward nick the sheep from the top of the goal net?

and as I recall the coaches arrived some time after half time ..and fans got aharged full price.

Carlisle away around 81 was a Tuesday game took a day off work, 12 hour round trip on the coach which was quite full. So about 40-50 I would say. It was a horrible 0-0. I still have the programme and Peter Beardsley played for Carlisle.

The ONLY good thing about that game was that I parked directly behind the away terrace on the opposite side of the road.

Quickest I've ever got out and away from a match in my life!

I saw Torquay at Scarborough on a Tuesday in Feb once (don't ask!) and there was one Torquay fan on the away terrace - a large woman with a very long scarf - slightly mad IIRC - same person??

So did I! I had driven from Leeds and was running late and thought I would have trouble parking. Horrible night.

I remember going to watch Bolton V Reading at Burnden Park in the FA Cup with Jim Leighton in goal. Reading got beaten and it pissed with rain the entire match. Anyone remember a Reading fan called Bunyan? He was there - he used to go to lots of games at this time. Anyway, probably about 50 people there.

That was the second of three seasons in a row with a trip to Carlisle in a Tuesday night ...... 3-3, 0,0 and a 2-1 defeat.

I must've been on that coach with you

Crewe away on a Friday night in the late 1980's, at the start of the August Bank Holiday weekend; the coaches only got as far as Birmingham before being turned round due to the problems with all the holiday traffic, so the only attendees were independent travellers.

Certainly well under 40 away that night.

Well I was Billy no mates I was on my own... :( I had decided to chose that season as the one I would go to every game home and away. I remember Denny Fullbrock had managed to get the players complimentry tickets and gave them to the fans who had traveled up and watched the game from the main stand a rare luxury in those days.
