I can't help but think since kittengate this thread has improved immeasurably.

Dyno-Rod's bid has been rejected.

It stank apparently

looking at how inept ireland were (though to be fair they had a touch group) i cant believe long didnt play (the 2 min sub doesnt count). doyle was largely ineffective. i thought long's pace and good hold up play would have been a useful asset

The noise 8)

That 1 second pause as the ball goes in then hits the roof of the net followed by the noise is bliss.

and long's delayed reaction is cool - shame we defended poorly in the final - but just a year later it doesnt matter

I thought Doyle was excellent in the 1st half, a superior defense held him down in the second, didn't see a lot from Long. Still a fan though, would love to see him back.

Whilst mindful of the potential for massively RTG when viewing a Reading Old Boy, I have to say I totally agree re Long. (But I did think Doyle was better than ineffective.)

When did Long suddenly become a "hold-up" player?
IMHO that is his downside-his inability to hold the ball and bring others into play.
He is a strong runner,a fair finisher and quite a good header of the ball but his big downfall is an inability to link play and it looks as though Trapattoni felt the same way and saw more in Cox,Walters,Doyle and Keane than what he felt Shane could offer.
Having signed a genuine "hold-up" player like Roberts I hope that is the way Brian sees us continuing to play in the future rather than the "hit and hope" stuff of the Long era and that Long is now a player from our past rather than our future.

Trapattoni also felt that ODea was a better defensive option than Alex Pearce and didn't realise Ian Harte was Irish

I think Shane looked great in his cameos at the Euros. I would love him back.

I don't think we'll see his return this summer. We did place a bid and it sat there for the new manager in waiting to come in and make a decision, but we are now in talks with two other strikers.

Have we dropped our interest in Rhodes?

A month ago I was told we were prepared to match any offer for him. I don't believe that's changed.

Shame about Shane.
