Just to put the finances in context :

Even if the suggested £65k per week is correct -

Jay Rodriguez - £30k per week for 52 weeks for 4 years = £6.24m +£7m transfer fee is £13.24m
The Pog - £65k per week for 52 weeks for 4 years = £13.52m

Not much difference in price for a current international who's been plying his trade in the top divisions of Europe, versus an unproven, non-international.
JR may prove to be a worldbeater, but at the current moment, this looks like a reasonable deal in comparison

The main difference would be upon relegation. We'd find it fairly easy to move on Rodriguez for a decent fee and he'd find it fairly easy to find a similar or better wage.
Pogrebneyak on the other hand, obviously we'd find it relatively easy to get a large fee than we spent, but would he find somewhere that would pay as much or more as easily? Much less certain, in which case we could be stuck with someone on £45k in the Chump for 3 years. Which would be Bad.

It may well be a £13 M deal, but I'd be willing to bet that includes a sizeable signing on fee (given that he's on a free), and bonus payments, etc - be surprised if his "actual" weekly salary is in excess of £35k

I'd be amazed if we're offering him £65k a week. Apart from the financial implications I don't think McDermott would want to disturb the equilibrium with the other players to that degree.

That aside, if he is a player McDermott wants I hope we get him but, apart from a sensational start to his short spell at Fulham, wasn't he fairly ineffective ?
Nonetheless, I'm not going to complain if we get him as his reputation is clearly a step up on our existing players.

Sky Sports reporting 2 separate stories about the same player! One saying that Pogrebnyak is in talks with Reading and other prem clubs, and another saying that he will sign for Reading if he passes a medical tomorrow!!

We're not. It's around £30-35k a week with bonuses, and a hefty signing on fee.

Absolutely. NH said recently all player decisions remain his and Brian's. NH wouldn't stick around if that wasn't the case, and nor would McDermott.

Pogrebnyak is a big strong forward, like Roberts, and has a good goalscoring record at the top level. He fits the bill perfectly. In fact there are a lot of people looking at this and asking how we're getting him (if we get him).

Indeed, and apparently flew out to meet him during the Euro's. That I can believe, as he also wanted to speak to Sigurdsson himself to convince him to come here. Never very likely with Liverpool's interest though, but AZ prepared to go that extra mile to sell his vision of the club to new players.
