Ian Royal
cmonurz Re the anthem, agree with HB, doesn’t particularly bother me if players aren’t singing it, but when they are it does suggest a little passion for the game and the country. I’ve wondered before how mentally prepared players get for playing for their country – contrast the anthems in football to those in rugby where the players bellow them out like they really are about to go into battle, and it isn’t rare to see a few with tears in their eyes.

I want the players to show respect for the honour they are being afforded, so I want to see them all singing the anthem. It maybe suggests whether the attitude and approach is right. But lets face it, no one thinks its important player selection criteria or important in determining the out come of a match.

Anyone suggesting people do is a moron.

It's not a case of wanting players who sing to be picked, it's a question of wanting the players who are picked to behave in the "right way".

Not disagreeing with you cmonurz, more adding my thoughts.

Although I was thinking the other day... that a big part of performance, be it sporting, or arts related is mental focus and preparation. People do that in different ways and I wonder if perhaps for some, singing the anthem interfers with their pre-performance rituals and focus so they use it to turn inward and improve their focus rather than singing.

A thought which has changed my opinion on players who don't sing quite a lot.

In light of this, interesting to read in today's Mail that Rooney 'mentally prepares' for games by envisaging himself playing against the opponents. To the extent that he is sure to check exactly what kits the teams will be wearing, the night before the game, so he can imagine himself scoring and playing well against particular opponents. Sounds a bit schoolboy-ish, but clearly for Rooney what puts him in the frame of mind to play.

World clarse my arse.

Well perhaps against Wigan, Bolton and Blackburn.

Good penalty, though. (Can't think of any other significant contribution.)

he lacks the touch of a world class striker..in an average side(like england) he would struggle.

well, he wasn't match fit really and his touch was poor, but he's not going to get that back from not playing is he?

England, for all the backs against the wall hype, lacked real ambition. It worked vs the Swedes and was in all honesty lucky to work against the Ukraine. The first team that could actually keep the ball, made heavy weather of it, but ultimately walked it. No shame though, just not good enough.

Ian Royal He'll help link midfield and attack better, offer us more ball retention and some genuine quality attacking threat.

LOL, how did that work out for us then, Ian

Rooney was dog-sh*t. Hyped up by our media during the games in which he was banned, comes back and scores a header from one yard and that was about it. Supposedly our best player, he struggles to keep the ball under control half the time :| . Still, when he cuts inside Alex Pearce to score against little old Reading next season the media will no doubt have a collective errection.

Rooney tournament goals for England have come vs big opposition - Croatia, Switzerland, Ukraine

And which opponents have Defoe, Bent, Crouch, Welbeck and Sturridge scored against in tournament football?

Welbeck has played in one tournament, Bent the same (IIRC), Sturridge in zero. Defoe and Crouch do not seem to attract the same deification as Rooney does in any case. Do you think our opponents on the world stage rate him as kuch as our countrymen do? They probably just see a tubby man with a grumpy face who is more of a danger to himself than anyone else.

Yeah he was poor. But then Itally defended in numbers giving him little room and he got little service. I don't see how anyone else would have done a lot better, in terms of winning us the game.

He’s the best we’ve got.

Fwiw I think Defoe is under-rated and has been used too little, but Crouch is limited, Bent goes missing for whole games and is brittle, Sturridge has had ½ a good season, and promising as Welbeck is, he looks a bit lightweight and (imho) one-paced. Carroll could, and should, become our next world-class striker, but that depends on him being used the right way at his club, and continuing to get chances to play for England in teams with good wide players (or in the absence of those, Gerrard).

If we had someone genuinely banging on the door (an Oxlade-Chamberlain or Wilshere of a forward, for example) I’d be all for Rooney being a ‘squad player’, but we don’t.

It'd be interesting to get an honest opinion from a player about Rooney's contribution.

In the same way many of the fans do, I suspect the players have an expectation of what he can do and when he proves woefully incapable of doing that their heads might go down. Just a fraction maybe, but enough to have a detrimental impact on their performance as well.
