Fulham & Hammersmith Chronicle:
PAVEL Pogrebnyak would love to have stayed at Fulham, but the club were unwilling to match the sky-high wages offered by Premier League newcomers Reading, according to his agent.

The 28-year-old Russian, who underwent a medical at the Madejski Stadium this week, made a great impact on his arrival at Craven Cottage, scoring six goals in 12 appearances, including a hat-trick against Wolves.

Having arrived on loan from Bundesliga side Stuttgart in January, he was seen as the perfect replacement for Bobby Zamora, who left permanently for QPR in the same transfer window.

Fulham boss Martin Jol did acknowledge the terms of his deal with Fulham represented a gamble that ‘the Pog’, as he quickly became known to Whites fans, might be lured away by another club – and now he has.

"There are maybe a number of reasons why we have decided to move to Reading, but in the end, the difference in wages was too great and we could not ignore it," Hamburg-based agent Dr Oliver Wendt told the Chronicle.

"We did go back to Fulham, but they were not prepared to improve their offer.

"He was happy at Fulham and had a really great time there. Maybe he could have signed a new deal, but we have to consider the amount being offered at Reading."

On the basis of what Jol says it sound like Fulham made a cheeky offer in the hope of getting him on the cheap, but we made an offer "at the market rate"...

Has anyone considered that the signing on fee for Pogrebnyak itself has probably broken our transfer record?

I would discount this... it just sounds as if it is an agent saying look at me... I managed to get my player a great deal. If you want me to represent you call 0777777777. I look forward to making money with you soon.

Out of interest what are the general requirements to be granted a work permit like this?

Given that he is a current Russian international I would have thought the whole thing is merely a formality?

He must have played in 75% of the country's games in the last 2 years, with the country being in the top 75 in the world. "Exceptional talents" can get them on appeal.

He has to have played 75% of his country's competitive fixtures (so not friendlies) in the last two years. Russia have had 13 competitive games in the last two years - ten qualifiers and three Euro matches - and Pog played in 8 of them, which is only 62%.

The FA Website Where an application does not meet the published criteria, a club may request a panel to consider the player's skills and experience. In these cases The Football Association will refer the club's evidence to an independent panel.

http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/RulesandRegu ... ayers.aspx

So I would imagine McDermott is going because he doesn't meet the automatic criteria and so we have to provide evidence that Pog deserves one.

Good to have it finally done. I didn't think I'd see the day Reading signed a player that had won a Uefa Cup and European Super Cup, and was still mobile enough to get around the pitch. Great signing, and one that will help us attract even better players in the future.
