Looks like NS and Pearce will be only two players not wearing fancy dan football boots next season ... (see gallery on OS). Trivial I know.

Optimist We shouldn't sing "Shorey for England" this time, cos that's already been acheived, but a new song should also show our support for him doing something unheard of for a Reading player, any suggestions?

Here's an idea...

Nick Shorey,
Nick Shorey,
he always wins the ball,
he's only five feet tall.

There was never any problem with that during his previous seven years?!

Dont understand the negativity over this signing. People have got short memories, in our relegation season shorey was far from the only one to underperform and get a bit above himself. Overall he served the club superbly and is still an excellent player. He's not the strongest full back defensively ( could say the same about Harte and Cummings by the way) but his ability on the ball is still up there with some of the best and will be a very useful asset to us. Its obvious Harte is not gonna play week in week out in the prem, in fact id expect Shorey to eventually cement the left back position this season. Another very good and logical signing from McD

A little ambitious for the West Stand retirement home don't you think?

Can someone remind me of the circumstances behind him leaving please?

A case of running to where the money is and leaving us in the lurch or us offloading him a bit like Sig?

Just interested to know. Good to have him back whatever, but just interested.

Oh dear looks like I'm agreeing with Ian Royal. Whats wrong with me?

Seriously, I'd never rubbish a new player, (except to reduce expectations so he doesn't get booed after 5 mins, like the pog), and I won't start now. Fairly good to have shorey back, all is forgiven. That's about it.

Just a big :| at our idiotic fans who seem to think there's some sort of loyality practice that footballers must adhere to. Who gives a shit if he left 4 years ago? And whilst his performances were'nt his best at the end of his stay (and there were far worse culprits at that time), the vast majority were very good.

It's a good signing; "free", cover for Harte (who is ace of course but has the pace of a snail), wealth of experience, knows the set-up, etc. We need critical, quality mass in this league to stay up, it's not 06/07. This squad is shaping up nicely.

Signing a 1 year deal at 31 means that either there were no better offers or he feels he has something to prove here. I'm hoping it's the latter.

I should imagine he did have other offers. Just not from teams in the Premier League.

Yeah I have a massive issue with the way shunt and rosenoir player the next season, but I don't blame any players for relegation. If it comes down to individual errors then Gunnarssons woeful display in the 7-4 possibly cost us a point or Sonko's limp challenge and penlaty concession in the 6-4 at Spurs. 8 away goals and no points to show for it. Or the whole team display home to fulham. But end of the day you can't blame anyone. It was goal difference, 3 goals of it! Blame Pompey, who are liquidation or league 2 waiting to happen.

Wholeheartedly agree with the closing of the Tilehurst End piece on this.

So after all of the above, where do I think Shorey fits in? I'm going to be bold here and say that I think we'll see Shorey comfortably pass the 300 games for the club mark and feature in the majority of our Premier League games next season. Ian Harte has done tremendously well for the club in the last two years but my head says there's no way he's going to be able to survive against the very best wingers next season. For a long time people have maintained that Harte's attacking value has compensated for a slight weakness defensively but Shorey almost replaces the set piece worry and is far more mobile defensively. Nicky knows the club, the manager and if there's anywhere he'll recapture his best form it's back in Berkshire.

I can't wait to see him back in action and I'm hoping that this time he'll end his career with the club in the best possible way and rightly take his place among the most legendary of Royals.

Ian Royal
No Fixed Abode You don't need a FIFA pro coaching licence to work out that you just need to stick a pacey winger up against Shorey or Harte to totally destroy Reading down that flank.

Don't get me wrong, Shorey and Harte are decent players, but when you're up against Antonio Valencia, you need to have a left back with a bit of pace. It's ok to play these two against sides who don't have so much pace on the right wing.....

Murty wasn't pacey and he didn't do too bad against Ronaldo (or anyone else for that matter) considering the gulf in class. Pace helps, nouce is more important.

Oh and Welcome back Shorey. I hope to see you recapture your former glory with us.

Ronaldo scored against Reading though didn't he?

I remember Ronaldo absolutely rinsing Murty to score a goal at the Madejski stadium. It was embarassing.

Exactly. Don't get me wrong, Murty did well in the Prem. However, over the course of a season, if you're lacking a bit in pace or technical ability you will get found out from time to time.
