Goals per game ratio's, these are club games only:

Noel Hunt 0.26
Jason Roberts 0.31
Adam Le Fondre 0.41
Pavel Pogrebnyak 0.28
Simon Church 0.17
Mathieu Manset 0.18
Karl Sheppard 0.33
Jermaine Defoe 0.37

Draw your own conclusions here, but despite this list, and defoe having favourable stats, I still wouldnt have him. Agree in that, he is either ON FIRE, or you go WEEKS without hearing his name mentioned. Would we prefer the occasional 1,2,3 goal burst, then no return for 2 or 3 months, or would we prefer decent CONSISTENT performances throughout the season??

Defoe is the PL's most prolific substitute EVER for a start. He'd go weeks without being mentioned because Harry barely played him! That's because Harry always wanted a Big Man up top when he had to accommodate Van der Vaart and Bale, and Modric (overrated) in his midfield and the likes over his tenure. I refuse to believe Defoe wouldn't be able to do MORE with MORE minutes on the pitch. He's DEADLY in or near the the box. If he secures our Premiership survival for this year alone, he's paid off his worth. End of.

Agent balti, I completely agree with everything you said, I suppose if you broke those stats down i posted to goals v minutes on the pitch, then Defoe would stand up with most.

And yes,if he comes and he secures survival, and or better, then yep, fee paid off

I'm SLOWLY being tempted!!

Can understand the concerns to age/wages/pricetag etc. But people seriously complaining about his goals to game ratios etc is silly. play him regularly in a 4-4-2 (and not a 4-5-1 like he has been playing at spurs) especially with Roberts or Pog and he will get goals.

Royals-lad14 £10m is about right for an England international who is a proven prem striker

In that case Lets sign Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand .. Oh wait we did sign Les Ferdinand but he seemed to have lost his bite as he had got older.

£10 Million is too steep. Allow us to sign Jermaine for half of that then, and I'd be interested

I don’t think anyone is disregarding Defoe’s quality. Just that, if given 10m, some people would rather spend it on players other than Defoe.

Keep in mind 8m would have bought us Gylfi Sigurdsson, and that’s a player who is going to still be playing in 4 years.

I'd take Defoe for 4m tops, but otherwise he's an expensive player to have on the books who we'd struggle to move on at any value, doesn't quite fit the mould, nearing his use-by-date, and would eat into our tranfer fund when we have other areas in more urgent need of depth than striker when you consider Pog, Roberts, Hunt and Alf can all do a job.

Good player, but the deal doesn't do it for me.

ok name me a striker that is under 30 that has scored over 100 goals in the premiership that we could get for less than 10 mill?

bigmike Not wanting to be like Snowball but

Le Fondre has better stats

League games 203 (91) Goals 122

also Defoes a prick

Are you seriously suggesting that Le Fondre is a better player than Defoe? :|

No I was saying that Le Fondre has a better goal scoring ratio so that argument was flawed .

Never really liked Defoe. Think our striking options are fine. I'd far rather see us spend money on a CB and RB. And maybe an CM. If we do all that and have the money left over fine. I'll get over us signing him if it happens and give him the same chance as any new player, but it would be a huge mistake to sign him and no more defenders IMO.

Couldn't we have both?

We already have two Premiership strikers (Pogrebnyak and Roberts) and we have a couple of players who could step up (in order of likelihood, Le Fondre, Hunt, Church). I think Roberts in particular could be consistent, add a lot to our play and score goals throughout the season. The jury is out on Pog, at least in terms of consistency, as none of us have watched him every week for a long time. We could have a starting pair of Pog and Defoe with Roberts and Le Fondre on the bench, then if Defoe isn't scoring for a spell we could switch and use him as a sub.

Leroy Lita didn't do a great deal for us for long periods, but in his three good spells he won us loads of points with his goals. I think Defoe could do the same. When Lita wasn't playing well, we had Doyle, Kitson and Long, and later Hunt, to fill in. If Defoe hits a bad spell, we have Pog, Roberts and Le Fondre. I don't necessarily think we need him, but I would be excited if we signed him and I think he'd be an improvement on Le Fondre.

The stumbling block is that Spurs only have one senior striker at the moment. Until they two more they are unlikely to sell Defoe. Damio, Adebayor and Ba are mentioned.

Not sure you've been following my argument all that closely. I don't think striker is the position most urgently needing attention, to the sum of ten mill at least, and I'm talking players rather than player.

'kin-ell :|

Ferdinand was approaching 40 years of age when we signed him. Defoe is not quite 30 and was playing international tournament football last month.

Actually I might give you another of these :|

If we can afford to sign Defoe and he would actually want to come here, why the hell wouldn't we buy him? I can't believe there are genuinely people who don't think our striking options would be improved with this signing.

Following the 'Dear Prudence' era of Madejski, I think a lot of Reading fans genuinely feel like sh*tting themselves with fear whenever the thought of us spunking massive dosh comes along. It's kind of a footballing Stockholm Syndrome, perhaps.
