Woodcote Royal Your assessment of Shorey's first 5 seasons with us is typical East Stand fantasy where only the return of Nicky "Can't score, won't score" Foster would have a greater effect on the match day ejaculation count.

Absolutely genius. Andy Hughes > Nicky Shorey, Nicky Forster is no good and your 'location' sl8s one of our very best ever managers, highly regarded whichever club he has been it.

You are certifiably insane.

Alan Partridge Woodcote will be pleased.

This is one selfish pr*ck I thought we'd seen the last of. Back in the days when we couldn't afford 2 left backs, this guy played every week regardless as long as he was fit. On the only occasion he was injured long term, a right footed midfielder of limited ability stepped into the breach so effectively that he wasn't missed.

How did Shorey repay the club who plucked him from the obscurity of Orient reserves, taking him up through the leagues to the Premiership and eventually to the ultimate glory of an England cap? He went on a 9 month sulk when a transfer to West Ham fell through :|

Shorey will have to walk through many brick walls before he gets an ounce of support from me. You owe us big time, Sunshine

Having said all that, Brian McDermott has earned the right to sign Noddy and Big Ears if he feels so inclined and will continue to enjoy my unwavering support.

Furthermore, Shorey would do well to realise that he is being given a chance to resurrect his flagging career by a very shrewd manager who is risking very little of his budget on the outcome. If selfish Shorey sh*ts on us again, he'll be third choice before the next transfer window opens and out the door next summer.
Shorey gave us 6 years great service and 1 bad one when the squad as a whole failed.

.

The massive distinction being that his abject failure that season appeared to be due to lack of commitment and fight, rather than lack of ability or loss of form and/or confidence.

.. and here we go again. All the self righteous prigs who think that footballers should somehow have a different set of loyalties to the rest of us.

You jus know that the negative idiots on here would jump ship pretty quickly if they were offered a promotion and pay rise.

Most of the people on here aren't earning a fortune in a job they love. Neither does their employer have hordes of fans who think they're great pay their hard earned cash to watch them perform.

Neither are most of them in a job that will see them retired in their 30s I suspect?

Let's be honest. Football is a job. A well paid one (at the top) and one that is probably more fun than most but it is still how they earn a crust. There are few people who would turn down a promotion and pay rise that could lead to even more advancement simply to be loyal to the customers. Perhaps half the problem here is that I don't and never have bought in to the idea that Shorey (or anyone else) deliberately under performed that season.

Agreed with every word of the second paragraph. Just a job to them, hence why I don't particularly feel fickle if I shout abuse at them from the terraces 8)

Take issue with your first point though - they could always retrain in order to undertake a new career when they retire, such as footballers used to do way back when it wasn't a millionaire's game.....

Still hasn't set in that he's our player again. Seems a lifetime ago that we had that 106 squad, completely different era now. Will need to work very hard to find a place in this team

i think this is a mistake

he is not the necessary upgrade needed - he is average

we are making the classic mistake of the nouveau riche club of paying big wages for average players

guys like pog, guthrie, simpson and now shorey on lots of bills - it ain't right and it could damage us

why?

a) our wage bill will go up

b) financial fair play is coming soon

c) these players don't deserve such big wages, they have achieved very little in the game

d) it may cause ructions in the squad as the players that got us up get jealous and sneer

e) it may lead to current players asking for pay hikes

f) it will lead to future transfer targets making massive wage demans

g) it could cause trouble off the field as players with extra cash maybe will spend it on drugs and women

h) a rift may develop between the working-class element in our fanbase and the players as the pay gap widens between them

i) we may become a less admired, quaint and lovable smalltown club and instead people might view us as vulgar

j) the bonds that the team have tradionally built up between our players may not be so great if we sign lots of mercenaries and foreign players who may not have great english

k) if our backer pull out, we will have average players on bloated wages and we'll have to still pay them off and may face the threat of administration

l) as a result of increased wages the cost of tickets may go up

m) away trips may not be as much fun anymore simply because the spiritual connection between the fans and the players may not be as strong

n) even if we win trophies, we will be accused of buying them

o) as the squad increases in size, more and more players will become disenfranchised and gloom may descend on the club

p) our players on real big wages might not find a residence in Reading that is sufficiently luxurious for them causing them to live elsewhere and be tired at training

q) fitness levels may be affected by players spending big on fancy restaurant meals and binging sessions

r) Mcdermott has no experience dealing with large squads of superstars, if they ask him to show them his medals, he may not impress them enough to command their respect

s) other clubs might start referring to us as "chelsea-lite"

t) we might develop a reputation as a kind of comfort home for older players looing for a last big payday

u) michale owen may lick his lips at the thought of signing for us

v) our youth may be blocked from getting experience on the first team by mercenaries and drug-takers

x) failed ex players may view us as an easy pay day, a fallback option after they have failed elsewhere

y) we may end up signing commercial deals to bring revenue into the club to help pay these wages that are not in the best interests of the club, like deals with russian casinos and child trafficking programs

z) the players might drive flashy new cars around Reading leading to people staring, accidents being caused and young women possibly being impressed and corrupted by them

i just can't see how the shorey deal is a good one for the club

Guthrie and Shorey superstars

You seem to put a lot of time and thought into that post. Which is a crying shame really, because it was almost entirely garbage.

From the match highlights vs SW, Shorey looked composed and dangerous with the ball at his feet. His distribution was really good and looking to utilise Roberts with the ball into feet to maximise Roberts' strength in holding the ball for the rest of the team to push up. Judging the Pog's hold-up skills from the videos, we now have two 'ball-to-feet' target men up front who can take the pressure off the defence when the ball is played up to them.

Shorey's set-pieces also looked really good. I would say they are close to Ian Harte's quality, though there were no edge of the area free-kicks to compare Shorey with Harte.
I think this is actually a good bit of transfer business by BMD. :)

I heard yesterday that we were speaking to Taye Taiwo [AC Milan] before settling for Shorey. We were speaking to the player but he wouldn't drop his wages below 40k a week. I assumed this was for a permanent deal, but he today joined Dynamo Kiev on a season-long loan. For me that makes the signing of Nicky Shorey a little disappointing, especially after some of the reviews WBA fans have given him after last season. But it goes to show we still have our sensible head on, and we wont pay over the odds for anyone we don't believe is worth it.

Taiwo has been linked with so many top teams in his career that it would appear that signing him at Reading would have been a real coup, however I thought he was SERIOUSLY average at QPR last season - QPR fans on the whole rated him...

Don't give a shit about the jumping ship aspect. It's the fact he didn't put any effort in while waiting for the move I take issue with. My company wouldn't be too happy with me if I spent my time peeing in the drinking fountain during my notice.
