Whilst now regretting setting off this whole issue the FACT is that no one has ever scored more than 161 on a Cattell IIIB test undertaken by British Mensa. The Mensa level for membership is 148. 161 on this test is off the scale well above genius level.

I sat the Cattell Culture Fair IIIA and scored 133 (Mensa level 132).

If anyone has scored more than 161 it was NOT a British Mensa test. There are any number of IQ testing systems available - some scoring up into the 200's - but these are not British Mensa tests.

So guys either you sat another test or you are lying if you say you scored over 161.

Mind you on reflection I guess Snowball might have got 168! It would explain a lot.

I guess if you complete a test at home that is designed to be taken under exam conditions on a timed basis - when you can look up the answers and spend unlimited time on it - then getting 100% becomes a possibility. Based on that all exams should be sat at home without time limit and everyone can get top marks.

It's a simple fact that I was once in Mensa. The only reason it came up was because I dispute the 161 limit.


But I've been thinking on that and it could be right (these days) if the test is so set up that
many people can get every question right within the time limit.

That's a poor test, BTW, having such a ceiling effect.

and anyone who thinks it does, is obviously a long way off that 161.


A good test is one that either nobody or 1/2/3 people could get 100%
but brilliant people could score 90-99. That way, you are able to discriminate
AMONG those who make it into the top 2%.

I'm pretty sharp, but the idea that "officially" I am or was just 3 points of the absolute
limit of IQ is utterly laughable. It's the make-up of the test, not the limits of human IQ

Also from the above post a couple above Snowball has absolutely no idea how IQ tests work. I cannot be bothered to explain or with this subject any longer.

Sorry everyone for starting this (proves I am actually quite stupid as I should have known it would set Snowball off). It is amazing how a throw away line can start off an avalanche.

But for the record I really did pass the test in the early 1980's - but never bothered to join - as I suspected Mensa might be full of Snowballs and I would rather be down the pub with my mates.

It was standard practice back then. You sat the first test to be allowed to sit the supervised test.

In fact I sat the first one "supervised". I was in the Air Force and asked a senior education officer
if he'd mind supervising me.

In those days (a mere 43-44-45 years ago) the test was divided into 2-page sections and you got 7 minutes for each section.

You had to absolute BLITZ to answer every question (a false measure of intelligence. Quickness is one thing but this was effing silly)


When I sat the second test, I was again blitzing page-pairs and one pair I finished early. When I turned the page over
(after a few minutes thumb-twiddling) there was a THIRD page I was supposed to have answered. The examiner wouldnt
let me do it despite the fact I'd been sitting there waiting. My bad.

I sat the test in my early 20s when I was in the RAF.

As I've said, you sat a home test IN ORDER TO SEE IF IT WAS WORTH PAYING for a supervised test.

That's what I did and, as I said, I score 10 less when supervised, not because I cheated on Test 1
but because I missed a whole page on Test 2. Had I not missed I'd've scored pretty much the same as T1.

And back then MENSA DIDN'T administer the tests themselves. You were expected to get an educational psychologist to supervise you.

PS, all *I* did was enter the discussion ref "161" and quote what I knew for certain,
from the inside. If, as per usual, the mongs decide it's Snowball-baiting time, then
