After all this 'certainty' over Simpson, and now possible Gunter we'll end up with Young, which imo would be a bit of a let down.

I have no problem with Young on a 12 month contract (like Shorey) to see how he does - but he is not a long term solution.

Jonathan Greening tweeted that a fee's been agreed :?

@yorkyjono only has 300 odd followers but McCleary follows him and @yorkyanna has put pics of him up so I think it's a real account. Maybe.

I don't believe this as Dare to Dream said we were definitely signing Danny Simpson.

Local paper are saying 2.3m fee been agreed and medical will be today

Notts evening post-

NOTTINGHAM Forest today find themselves back at square one in their search for a new manager, after Mick McCarthy last night turned down the job.

The former Wolves boss had been the Al Hasawi family's number one choice for the role ever since they completed their takeover of the club.

And McCarthy himself arrived for face-to-face talks yesterday hoping to put pen to paper on a deal to become the Reds new manager. But it is understood that McCarthy backed out after failing to see eye to eye with the club hierarchy after discussing their plans for the future in more depth.

McCarthy had sought reassurances that he would have autonomy when it came to the management of the club and their activity in the transfer market.

And Forest were active in that area for the first time since the takeover last night, as the club agreed a £2.3m deal to sell Chris Gunter to Reading. The full-back will undergo a medical today.

If the deal goes through it will leave the Reds without a single experienced defender in their squad, with the new season barely a month away.

If this really happens, as tough as it would be on Cummings, this would be an excellent signing for us; gives us two young, hungry to succeed rb's at the club.

We need to have quality cover in all positions; the days of "lets stick X there if we need to" have to be in the past, otherwise we will leak points we can't afford to at PL level.

As this pre-season has gone on, the more impressed I have been by the way the club has gone about doing its transfer business; it really sets the season up nicely to think that with a Month to go, we have pretty well assembled the squad we want, which gives them time to train and gel together, so we waste as little time as possible at the start of the season.

Hasn't Gunter already played in the Premiership with Spurs so he will have some experience - which would make him one of the more experienced members of our squad in that sense.

He turned out 5 times but didn't play a full 90 in any of them, so not sure how helpful that experience will be.

Moved in 2009, so any experience he had in the PL was a few years ago.

Will be a step up for him.
