SCIAG
BrockManson No chance is he better than Roberts. Roberts has a footballing brain and knows when to time his run, how to link up play and can anticipate what his teammates are trying to do.

Long ... relies on pace and power to compensate from the fact he has limited ability and a lack of awareness.

'Greed.

Long is still a very effective player though. Roberts might have more "ability", but Long will score more goals, and when it comes down to it, that matters more.

You mean @ReadingFC__News who tweet "news, rumours, gossip and banter"? Yes I saw it too, and it clearly says in the hashtag it's a rumour.

Ian Royal
Royal Rother It would be interesting to see a stat attack comparing Roberts and Long.

For me, I would far rather see 25 year old Long play for Reading than 35 year old Roberts and find it somewhat amusing that daft feckers like BrockManson are still under-rating and disrespecting him based on how he used to play a long time ago.

Here you go Rother. Took about 10 mins.
Shane Long:
11/12 - 32 appearances - 8 goals
Average - 1 goal every 4 games.
Jason Roberts:
11/12 - 10 appearances - 1 goal
10/11 - 25 appearances - 5 goals
09/10 - 29 apps - 5 goals
08/09 - 26 apps - 7 goals
07/08 - 26 apps - 3 goals
06/07 - 18 apps - 4 goals
05/06 - 34 apps - 8 goals
Average - 1 goal every 5 games.

Roberts is a good, clever player. But he's not a great PL goalscorer. Even in his prime he's not played a full season and got 10 top flight goals. He's now 34. He's an excellent player to have, but anyone who expects him to reasonably pick up more than 5-8 goals and play in more than 25 games is in brendy level blind mental optimism mode.

You don't have to be a clever player with great vision to score goals. Long's direct and bullying approach is very effective now he's got it right and I think he's shown if he gets the games he'll be pushing 10 goals most seasons at this level. His style is helped by a team playing well, but it's not essential to him scoring IMO.

What about assists? I would guess that Roberts is ahead of Long in that respect. Roberts does seem to be a more complete footballer, but I think Long is a very good striker.

Long got a lot of assists with us when he came good (10). Roberts got 5 last season with us tbf.

Can't find an official PL assists stat website without putting in more effort than I can be arsed with.

Why are seasons over three years ago being used to address Long's form? His last two seasons with us were good and he had a decent stab in the Prem for a sh/t team while injured for much of it. That's all that is relevant.

Classic Reading player who combines hard work with quality - get him back.

Just seen Shane in my bar in Reading. Not saying that this means anything whatsoever, just thought it might be noteworthy!

Or you've just made half of that up! What's the point? When do the kids go back to school?

It probably means Simon Cox will go to Forest.

Wouldnt want him back. He hasnt set the world on fire since he went to WBA and I dont feel he will. Did a good job for us (had one good season) and like Doyle is actually a bit overrated, works hard, but doesnt score enough goals at this level. We dont need him anyway, ALF is a far better goalscorer.

TheSiege See the Lukaku thread, which should be subsumed into this one. They both incorrectly think that Long may return to us! We can do much better if we are still prepared to spend money.

Still? Have we spent any yet then?
