2012-13 season previews

There is seemingly a lack of previews so far, but I'm expecting BBC and Sky Sports to post up theirs in the next couple of days and the usual dull-witted predictions from people such as Mark Lawrenson. However, I have spotted a couple of general season previews through a google search. Here's one from some American dull lack-wit:

Laughably, they call us "Reading Royals" and Southampton "Southampton Saints", Americans eh! Outrageously, they've tipped us as strong contenders for the drop saying we don't have a strong team. I reckon his viewpoint is based on ignorance. Finally, I note that they've described Brian McDermott as a GM. I assume that means "General Manager"???

Looks good. I'd expect one from the Guardian too. There also seems to be a few team oriented you-tube clips showing previews, none of them about Reading so far. This one has a preview, seemingly nicked from the Tilehurst End website:

Aah, but you are forgetting that all three promoted clubs survived last year, which to the completely clueless could be a pointer to how the three promoted clubs will do this year.

Four Four Two recruited Darren "Sicknote" Anderton, who said we would finish 18th. Strangely this man felt that Tottenham will definately finish above Arsenal, QPR are a top 10 side who will be fighting for a Europa League spot, and West Ham will finish in a lofty 13th. Swansea were predicted bottom as Anderton doesnt know anything about them, with West Brom 19th, who he obviously hates due to the links he has with the Golden Shower (Our pals in the other dirtier end of the Black Country)

So the consensus among these hacks seems to be the higher profile and sensationalist teams will win/stay up and the ones nobody hears about are doomed to relegation.

Southampton are expected to finish just above us, which means there 2 season spell in League One didnt damage there "give a oxf*rd rating too much.

What I found bizarre when checking a few weeks ago was that to win the league we were above Southampton in the odds, yet they had us more likely to get relegated.

I honestly cant see why people have faith in Southampton to survive. I think they will... but only just, and they'll finish below us. I'd say Norwich definately, Aston Villa more than likely and the other place is a toss up between 8 sides, which includes us, Southampton and West Ham, Wigan, Swansea, Stoke, West Brom and strangely I feel Everton. If push came to shove... I'd narrow it down to West Ham, Southampton and West Brom fighting it out on the last day

Just read through WSC's preview: we're tipped to be bottom by the consensus of panelists, just as we were for the 06/07 season.

More pleasing is the review of the season 11/12, almost universal approval from last season's Championship clubs (even got grudging approval from the WHU contributor), the sole exception coming from Watford, who slags us every year.

I can understand the mightier than thou attitude when its Championship or League 1 teams...

The thing is, nobody knows whats going to happen. These are predictions.

Given some of them can barely tie their own shoelaces and can't spell Reading let alone tell you anything about our squad or how we've done over the last three seasons, I'd fancy plenty of people on here to know more about our chances of survival than ex-premiership professional footballers.

fwiw, I think we'll probably be in and around the relegation fight, I reckon we'll probably be able to tell to a fairly high degree of accuracy whether we're going to go down after 5 games.

Well, it depends, I think those views on how Reading are going to do are usually based on ignorance. Do you seriously think that those ex-premiership players watch Reading play very often?

I think we know more about our team than people who've never seen us play.

After Alan Shearer got the job on MotD the producer asked for comments about the show. I asked them (referring to 2006/7) that if they are going to devote much of the first show of the season to the promoted clubs, discussing their survival prospects, shouldn't the "experts" at least make some effort to try and find out about the team before giving their judgement.

His reply was that he thought predictions of Reading struggling were fair, because Sunderland had struggled the previous year after winning the title.

At the end of the season Lawrenson summed up the reasons for Reading doing well by saying "they have pace". We didn't even have all that much pace that year.

That kind of sums up the level of expertise on the MotD sofa. Sure, they can tell everything inside out about the top sides, but they don't care about anyone else.
