Squad cost

by andrew1957 » 16 Aug 2012 16:17

I think a comparison of the cost of squad acquisition comparing now to the start of 2006/7 is quite and interesting exercise. The 06-07 squad must have been one of the cheapest ever to play in the PL and at under 10M the current squad is not far behind. Overall the current squad looks a lot strogner to me athan 06-07 and the quality of Academy products is almost certainly much higher.

Putting it into perspective many other PL teams have one player valued at more than the acquisition cost of our entire squad.

Total cost of assembling the 2006/7 squad - cost of transfer fees was £5,973,000 made up of - Seol 1M, Lita £1M, Convey £850K, Murty £825K (in total), Harper £400K, Kitson £350K (in total) , Sodje 350K, Halls £250K, Golbourne £250K, Ingimarsson £175K (in total), Sidwell £150K, Stack £100K, Gunnarson £100K, Doyle £78K, Brown £50K, Shorey £25K, and Long £20K - (17)
Free transfers/Bosmans – Federici, Hahnemann, Sonko, Little, Hunt, Oster and De La Cruz (7)
Academy – Hayes, Cox, Rendell, Sinnot, Hamer, Pearce, Davies, Osano, Henry, Ujah and Joseph-Dubois (11)
Inward loans - Mate and Bikey (2)

Total cost of assembling current 2012/13 squad - £9,730,000
The total cost of £9,730,000 is made up of the following transfer fees paid – Mariappa £2.5M, Gunter £2.3M, Gorkss £900K, Leigertwood £750K, Hunt £600K, McAnuff £500K, Le Fondre 350K, Roberts £300K, Morrison 300K, Cummings £300K, Tabb £300K, Kebe £250K, Andersen £100K, Gunnarsson £100K, Harte 70K, Sweeney 60K and Williams 50K - (17)
Free transfers/Bosmans – Shorey, Pogrebnyak, Guthrie, McCleary, Sheppard, Mills, Edwards and Federici - (8)
Academy – Henly, Partridge, Webb, Samuel, MacDonald, Arnold, Losasso, Ugwu, Obita, D’Ath, Hector, Taylor, Bignall, McCarthy, Karacan, Robson-Kanu, Pearce and Church - (18)
Inward Loans – (0)

Plenty of teams wanted ALF when we bought him as I recall and in the grand of scheme of things, £350k is looking ever more like a steal.

Surely our squad must be the most cheaply assembled in the Prem this season? Southampton have a whopping £7 million addition in Rodriguez. The signings for us this summer could be summarised as squad strengthening, no real marquee amongst them. Just smart signings with relatively low outlay.

The 12/13 squad definitely has more prem experience in it than 06/07, which bodes well, although both squads have a fair few experienced players with a LOT of FL experience but none to few prem appearances in them (Murty/Ingi/Shorey/Harper/Gunnar/SHunt; McAnuff/Hunt/Mariappa(some prem)/Gorkss. Interesting to think about who made the step up last time and who will this from the 12/13 squad.

I thought Jobi and Kebe were both signed for around 1.5 - 2.5 million!? Not sure where I got those figures from!

andrew1957 Seol 1M, Long £20K

McAnuff £500K

Those fees are all wrong. Long was free with Doyle. Seol was £1.5m. I think McAnuff was more like £700k but I can't remember the precise fee.

I don't see the sense in including the fees of players who never played for Reading or may as well have not been in the squad like Brown, Williams, Halls, Golbourne, and Sweeney (as things stand).

As much as I hate like to say it, but don't think our current squad is as good as our 2006 squad...

Why apologise? You're not alone in posting blinkered nonsense from the darker recesses of Steve Coppell's backside.

Cost of squad shows or proves nothing - especially with Bosman transfers available.

The real correlation that shows you the likely performance of a team is the annual salary cost (squad, not player).

Produce that and it might be worth the effort.

Good idea. I will phone up my mate Anton and ask for a full list of salaries for this season and 2006-7 and then publish them for all to see on here.

I have the salary totals for all the seasons up to last year - it's the current ones that would show us something new.

Oh, but we'd need the same data for teh other 19 clubs - because it's not how much you spend that counts. It's how much you spend compared to how much everyone else is spending.

Which, incidentally, is how football got itself into such a financial mess.

It's pretty much a salary based arms race.

andrew1957 Long was free with Doyle.

The rumours here in County Cork were that we gave Cork City twelve pairs of boots and a bag of footballs in payment for Shane.

Sky says Southampton are just about to splash 11.8M on a Uruguayan. And have already paid 7M on Rodriguez - plus bought others so are now well over 20M.

You can see why we are favourites for relegation as our net spend has been less than 4M in total.

Still in Brian we trust and team ethic is worth more than big fees paid out.

thats crazy

id rather have the players weve got for free and cheap than rodriguez for 7 million, thats just utterly metal,
and is part of the reason you ant take spending and extrapolate to survival, cos theres no accounting for what mabtal ammounts of money desperate managers will pay for average players.

just saying we spent 7 million woohoo is daft- yeah you have, on a bog standard championship player, congrats

It's not just managers being prepared to pay such sums - there'll always be a clamour from supporters, fuelled by the media, to "splash some cash" because if they don't they're not showing "ambition."

Agreed. Could argue it pleases supporters, but it's soon forgotten if you're washed right back out of the league. I'm so far pleased with the Bosmans and cheaper moves.

From Guardian: Ramírez, 21, has been linked with moves to both Liverpool and Tottenham this summer but has chosen to move to St Mary's Stadium instead... "They believe in me in every way," Ramírez told the Italian newspaper, Corriere dello Sport. "And above all I have said that they are going to grow."

Outbidding much larger clubs is one way to start...
