2006/07 Season compared to now

by Malbury Royal » 16 Aug 2012 23:32

In 2006 we had a very strong squad, however I feel most of our success in the 2006/07 Season was purely from the momentum we carried through from the previous year. The next Season we started to lose momentum and got relegated.

What im getting at is... If our current squad isn't as good as the one in 2006 I can't see us finishing top 10 like lots of people are predicting.

Thoughts?

You talk sh*t Malbury Royal (momentum).

106 points in the Championship, run away champions with a team of good quality players waiting for their chance under a great manager was behind our success as they could not wait to show what they could do hence why we finished 8th in our first season in Premiership.

Lack of investment in the 2nd Season, (Coppell believed the squad was good enough) and Pompey playing a second string eleven against Fulham because they had reach the FA Cup Final did not help our cause either.

Thebone thing this squad has at the moment is momentum. Just look at the 2nd half of our season. The success or otherwise of this season rests with harnessing that momentum.

I disagree. Thebone thing this squad has got is Mrs Zingarevich and any of her model friends who might just visit her.

Can't see I've seen many people predicting a top 10 finish for us to be honest. I think the biggest difference compared to 06/07 is the bottom half is a lot more evenly matched than before, so more teams fighting to stay up and a better chance of finishing above any three of them

hard to compare to be honest, but have a trust in the manager now that i didnt have then, Mac D will adjust as needed , Sir Steve couldnt or wouldnt do that.

Current squad much stronger than 2006/7 IMO BUT the PL has moved on since then and the player quality is higher overall so the jury is out as to whether the squad is good enough this time.

I think so but time will tell.

Likely better overall, but better competition at each position within the team, more importantly.

B Mc has learned from SSC extremely well, next game, dont set targets etc etc. Like SSC he has talked about his players being ready and two for each position, everything we need to hear and would expect to hear.

The main difference I hope is that this time we dont have billy big bollox players who think they are better than this club. Shorey being the exception.

If anyone can show me a player that has actually won anything after leaving i will be surprised, S Hunt, A Bikey, D Kitson, N Shorey, Sonko, Lita, etc etc

I think Shorey realises the mistake he made, and he seems determined to make it up to the fans. Id prefer Harte to start though

I'm not sure why having won something would be the measure of success for a player who left. Surely staying in the Premiership would be a better measure?

But for what it's worth Sidwell has a league cup runners up medal.
