I do support the brick by brick approach this club takes, in general. But Anton talked of establishing ourselves in the Premier League – at some point this club will have to pay transfer fees of £6m, if it is to do so. It’s not a £6m risk if we’re in the market for a goalscorer – anyone of worth at this level would cost at least half that, so that risk is ‘only’ £2-3m. Not much imho for someone with genuine goal-scoring pedigree.

Please enlighten us as to how your numbers work, how is the risk "Only" £2M-3M if you actually pay £6M?
If we pay £6M and sell him on later, after proven useless, and recoup only £750K, then we've lost £5.25M, and probably paid £1M wages yearly, so could potentially be out £8.25M after three years - AND could lose further if relegated, if you theorize that the wages and fee could have been spent on a player who was in fact up to it.

I'm not saying the guy is good or bad, or useless, I am just saying that IF he does not work out, the gamle is more like £8.25M-£10M rather than your completely ridiculous estimate of £2M.

Because when analysing the risk of an investment, you consider the marginal cost of that investment.

My post said ‘if we are in the market for a goalscorer’ – so if we are, any player will cost us a transfer fee, and any player will cost us wages on top of that. The marginal risk of buying Rhodes is how much extra we would pay in transfer fee and wages compared to someone else we might buy. Simple really.

Of course, the risk of buying Rhodes compared to buying no-one is his full cost - but that wasn't what I was addressing in my post.

when we pay someone 6 million quid, it will be for a proven prem/intl class player

not for some bloke who scored hatfuls in the lower leagues, and 1 goal for scotland.
it may well come off for them, he may have for us, but at that price, its not sensible in any way

I would also wonder whether the rather embattled Venkys may see some positive PR out of this, maybe to shut their own supportters up a bit? If the price has been structured as an up front price with add ons then I would like to have seen us in there competing. True that £6M for an unproven League 1 striker is a lot, but if it becomes £3M up front and the other £3M as add ons, then it makes it a more attractive proposition because if he ended up costing £6M it would be because his performance met the requirements of the add ons so he was bloody worth it!!

Surely the more pertinent question is why are Championship Blackburn paying 6 m when no one in the Premiership is willing to?

Exactly I think he is the type of gamble you take once you have had a consecutive season or two in the premiership. Its like an escalated version of when we buy players like Sheppard/Long/Doyle/Manset, its wonderful when they come off and they are great business but we are not relying on them to make it, they don't have to arrive and walk straight into the team because it is a calculated gamble. This won't happen with Rhodes, if we bought him for 6 Million he would have to walk into our team and be our best striker. That's a big risk for someone who has only scored a hat full in League 1 and one I don't think we should take

We are acting like a Prem club. No other Prem club wants a leage 1 striker for 6m, so not sure why you think we are acting differently.

Well said. 6M for a League 1 player is far too much. 3M or so might be worth the risk but HFC won't sell for that. Now best for all concerned if he stays at HFC and we can then see if he cuts it in the Championship - although if he does we will most likely not be able to afford him.

As a comparison Simon Cox had an excellent L1 record but only went for about 1.5M and has never really cut it yet above L1. Although one has to look at potential it must also come with a reasonable price tag.

TheSiege I think that they have always been a Prem club and act as such!

So basically you talk total and utter bollox. I thought you have been a supporter for years? You only started supporting us when we went up the first time and you are probably a 15 year old! Admit it. You certainly write like you are anyway...............

No, if TheSiege is a contemporary of the Pink Fairies, he has to be in his 60's. Maybe you've caught him in his second childhood!?!?

TheSiege
I do not want us panic-buying in January!

Though panic buying in August appears to be perfectly acceptable

The only people who seem to think Rhodes is worth paying the price being quoted are Steve Kean, the Venkys and you.

I'll be honest it's not the most illustrious group I've ever seen.

So now he has 2 in 2 games in the Championship do we stop referring to him as a "League 1 Striker"?
