Dominic Samuel

Apparently was set to be in the squad for the Sunderland game today - don't know a lot about him, any thoughts from those who have seen him?

His profile on the official site is a bit bizarre... he is listed as 5'12 and 14st 14lb - generally known as 6'0 and 15 st 0lb to most people...

Still very raw, but I saw enough in a couple of PSF's to suggest he'll be very decent once he fills out a bit (both physically and mentally).

FWIW Dolan reckons he's one of the best young strikers in England.

He's been involved in the England U19s. Scored a goal for them, too, if I am not mistaken. Did quite well in the U18s last year on top of that.

Bit of an odd one this - he was originally listed yesterday morning as part of he squad for he U21 game, then when we got there he wasn't on the team sheet so we assumed he was ill//injured.

I could understand us popping him on the bench behind Hunt/ALF if Roberts is still injured, but wonder why he seemed to be included so late?

Church is going off on loan so we need Dom ready as a back-up. Simple really.

Interesting height shown; 5'12" - is that the same as 6'0"??

Heavy bones? At 15st already I hope he doesn't 'fill out' too much!

No way in hell does he actually weigh 15stone. Look at him. It would make him 2 stone heavier than Pearce, Morrison and Gorkss lol.

For what it's worth the OS site's stats are frequently wrong, they are listing ALF at 5'10 making him apparently taller than Jem, Noel, Hartey etc.

The OS says he is going to go out on loan. Then he leapfrogs others into the first team.

Anyone know why?

Because someone in the coaching set up says "Actually it might be better for him if,in the short term, he was around the first team squad?"

Mental, rather than physical or technical, development?

I agree with this pretty much.

Samuel is the best goalscorer in the English youth leagues. Whether that's mostly because of his pace or not, I don't know, but the raw stats back Dolan up. Mind you, Dolan has said things like this before (Adam Bygrave is the second best young centre back in the country after Alex Pearce, Obita is the future of English football...)

Saw him come on in the second half during the development 11's pounding at Basingstoke in pre-season. Whilst we were dire enough that day to make his best efforts ineffectual, as far as I can remember Samuel was one of the few who stopped Basingstoke from looking like God's pub team. Despite personal attempts to induce post match amnesia with a wok, the fact that he showed promising feet, work ethic and pace, still sticks, albeit against Blue Square South opposition. I haven't seen him against more challenging adversaries, but he certainly showed glimpses on the day which suggest that he could be a promising talent. More importantly than any vindication I can offer though is the fact that McDermott has picked him to feature when more well established youngsters like Obita have been loaned out again. Our cover up front isn't thin enough to explain random youth inclusions, so for Brian to be so bold with a youth prospect must surely mean he really has something.
