Maria Kr. To close the discussion on him leaving and apparently scooping the official site by my estimation of a quick glance over the recent headlines and the fact that nothing's been posted here yet, Bryn's signed a new 1 year deal.

http://www.mbl.is/sport/enski/2012/05/01/gat_ekki_annad_en_tekid_thessu_bodi/ (interview with the man himself)

It's longer by a little bit in the actual paper (which I don't have with me atm so can't directly translate it),in the addition he mainly says his role next season will be similar to thisone, be ready if the manager needs him. Also mentions something along the lines of the setup of the Prem being better (must mean that there's fewer games and thus less strain on him/other players in that sense I recon) and he quips a reference in to older interviews about coming home that he'd said to KR that he'd be back assuming nothing drastic changed. Guess going up was the only thing that could've changed things. Says he's putting that off for a year, but plans haven't changed about which team he wants to come home to play for.

Funny. This is the Google translator of the article. Are you really sure Bryn is staying for a year?
Brynjar Bjorn Gunnarsson will remain in the camp of the English football club Reading for next season. Brynjar confirmed in an interview with yesterday but for some pointed up that he was walking home from a professional and would play with his former club, Manchester, in the summer. "I spoke with the manager before I went home and it's clear that I stay at Reading. First I was made this I found I could not help but take it where we have come up in the Premiership, "said Brynjar Morgunbladid  , who was just returned to Iceland. Brynjar Bjorn has been 15 years in the professional and the last seven years, played with Reading, who recently secured a victory in the Premier B league and game that the division of their best again but the team was there last in 2008.

Yeah the 1 years part was in the more extensive part that I couldn't translate for ya and if I remember right a direct quote of what Bryn himself said. He might've meant it more as in "another year (at least)" kinda thing, I forget the exact line.

Google Translate is Google Translate. Example: Massive LOL and good job to the person that told it that KR means Manchester..though I hope they meant it as in Man U and not the other ones.

TheSiege The man has been an excellent RFC player and, quite obviously, a star in the dressing room. Should he be one of the 25 this season - No chance at all! Coach - Yes.

I was on the same late night train as him on the way back to Reading from London a few weeks ago and I can report that he was drinking a can of San Pellegrino limonata. That's no coach's drink: it's an obvious indication that he's in full pre-season training!...Unless he was using the can to conceal a stronger kind of drink.

TheSiege We have to play a game that involves confirming 25 players. Any RFC fan who would prefer Gunnarson to Rhodes or Whittingham or Defoe or Zaha, please say so now!

Did we sign all those players today? Wow! I only switched off for two hours.

I'd prefer him to them. Because he's our player and they aren't. I'd certainly prefer him to Rhodes, Defoe or Zaha, because they'd be shit as defensive midfielders, centrebacks or full backs.

Also, I'll take Gunnarsson on a coaching and pay as you play wage, over spending £6m on a player who's not worth it and who'll want £20k / week+.

Not sure I agree. Fine to take him as a coach. But a player coach? He would be a bit part player in a Championship team, let alone a Premiership one. I'm not sure what's behind the idea to be honest. And his last appearance in a Reading shirt was shocking. I love the guy and he is a Reading legend, but I'm not sold on the player/coach idea.

Why would including Gunnarsson in the 25 man squad have any impact on whether we could include the 19 year old Zaha?

Also, we can't afford* the majority of those players so it's a moot point.

*By which I mean RFC's valuation of these players is below their clubs' valuations of these players. By several million each.

TheSiege This Gunnarsson thing has been going on for a long time. I got the impression that RFC wanted him to remain with us in a coaching capacity. He was obviously pushing for an extra years playing contract. Continuously, over the last 6 weeks, stories in the press have said 'Gunnarsson to sign a new contract' but, nothing ever happens. I think that BMcD has already realised that Gunnarsson will not add to our Prem options and will only take him as a coach. We still have money and a good signing to take the place in the 25 that Gunnarsson might have taken, would be a good move!

Agreed ()
I hope we don't lose him, because he wants to get one more year of playing and leaves us for a year never to return. Does he want his children to grow up in Iceland? If not then he ought to just take the coaching role as it would be more stable income and help his career transition.

I LOVE Gunnar, a truly great professional and good bloke

But Jeez, he's 114 (roughly) and with the 25 man rule it makes sense he's no longer a player.

I repeat. I love the bloke to bits, but time marches.
