Schards#2 Federici is in our squad because he is a proven top quality keeper, McCarthy is in our squad as he gives good cover in an emergency or injury situation.
Most level headed people do not think this is an emergency and Federici will return to form. There is history of goalkeepers being dropped after clangers being so short of confidence they are no use for months - Leighton/Beasant/Howie etc. Therefore, most level headed people don't thing it's a great idea to drop Federici at this point and risk leaving us with a keeper with no Premiership experience at all at the helm.

RoyalBlue I remain entirely confident that Bibbo and McDermott will make the right call in terms of what is right for Feds and the team.

cmonurz Lots of people feigning knowledge of some kind of higher being here that determines when is, and when isn’t, the time to drop under-performing players. Apparently me thinking that Federici should be dropped now means I’m not ‘level-headed’. When would that judgement become a fair one? After mistakes in the next two games? Or in the next four? Lots of cock-waving on this thread, it’s not unreasonable to think that with an England under-21 keeper in reserve, and one who has impressed for Reading in the past, he might get a chance when the only guy ahead of him in the pecking order keeps making mistakes.

Professionals have to be able to cope with being dropped and it is already as clear as day that Federici's confidence is shot to pieces. Last night was, hopefully, his last chance to show that the first 2 games were just a blip. He needs a break.
As for the rest of our keepers, if they are in our 25 man squad they should be considered good enough to play. Take a look at the Man City highlights to see how good McCarthy was the season before last.

floyd__streete What he didn't deserve after 2 very good seasons in a row and being an integral part of a Championship-winning side last season was a large and vocal section of absolute helmets singing Alex McCarthy's name after the admittedly quite appaling piece of goalkeeping for 1-2. In fairness it was then drowned out by an even more vocal rendition of Federici's name but it was quite unecessary to be honest.

RoyalJames101 If you don't like Federici, fine, just don't be a mong about it.
