It's definitely Kitson and not Shorey, having just finished the book I'd be willing to stake a reasonably large amount of money on this as there is nothing in there that doesn't fit with Kitson's career and experiences.
Start in non-league and discovered late? check
Promoted to Prem? check
Team mate receives first England cap and is more excited by the money? That'll be Shorey then
Failed big money move followed by bust-up with manager? check
Intimate knowledge of a club in financial difficulties and personal financial issues? check
Also the video on the Guardian site (
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/vide ... ller-video) is sufficient to tell it's not Shorey but is spot on build / body shape for Kits. Shorey has never struck me as being particularly intelligent whereas Kits always seemed a bit more intelligent than the average player and gobby to boot. Also I think from the book it's sufficient to tell he's not a defender and has never played for England (or any country for that matter).
Also look at this article from 2008 in FourFourTwo
http://weekendwonders.co.uk/news/story.aspx?id=43 similar views on football to TSF
and this
http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompe ... -1-3026897 where he talks about a love of wine and books (TSF talks about buying £1300 bottle of red on a night out with friends), case closed I think.
By the way, the book is very entertaining and well written and a must for any RFC fan given it's look behind the scenes of our club. It's only about £4 on Kindle; what a bargain
