What an utterly ridiculous thing to say.

Not sure where all the Rodger's hate comes from. He was crap for us, but perhaps he was a good manager at the wrong club. Anyway, Madeski sacked him and Rogers was completely gutted about it, so as far as I'm concerned he's already sufferred for that and I wish him well.

I agree that Liverpool's play actually looks pretty good and you can see where they are going with it. They desperately need a goal scorer or two though. There were quite a few new players in the team and you could see that at times the understanding between players wasn't there, but this will come with games. Arsenal were very good, defensively excellent and I was actually pleasantly suprised to see they had a bit of steel in Midfield with Arteta and Cazorla (I thought they'd miss Song more than they are doing).

I did think that it was a strange decision to get rid of Caroll before they had replaced him, but Rogers made his decision and went with it, thinking the board would back him in getting a replacement. It seems that hasn't happened. Why they didn't spend the £6 million for Dempsey, I don't know. Maybe they didn't have it or maybe the board weren't interested in a 29 year old player with little resale value. Still ridiculous though, Dempsey at £6 million is a no brainer to most people.

All Roger's can do now, I suppose, is either look at signing a free agent (Owen or, er.... Heskey  ) or tough it out until the January transfer window and buy someone then.

I'm with Ian, I'd be absolutely stunned if they go down.

He's right though. BR pretends to have more knowledge or skill than he possesses, so the word fits perfectly.

He has NEVER successfully changed a team to play "his way". Swansea had already been doing it for several years. He has failed to do it anywhere else. There is no "BR way".

Thank you Phil. I wasn't going to other replying to RR's typically condescending post, but you summed it up perfectly.

BR trades on being this implementer of glorious possession football. Whereas the reality is the only time it has been successful is when he inherited it at Swansea.

I don't have anything against him personally, it's actually probably the lazy media generalizations that annoy me more. However, he's made himself a very wealthy man landing the Liverpool job based on this image and his ability to talk a good game, so live by the sword die by the sword...

I'm sorry but this is a continuation of your ridiculous prejudice against the bloke.

The fact that he inherited a decent team who already played possession football does not in any way detract from his achievement in getting them promoted in his 1st season there and finishing 11th in his 1st season in the Premier League. HE got them there, Martinez didn't. Good God, he even finished higher in the table than Martinez' Wigan and at virtually no stage looked in danger of relegation, unlike Wigan.

Should Coppell's achievements at Reading be denigrated because he built on what Pardew had put in place? Or is it a bigger achievement in your mind because he took longer to get there?

I'm sorry, he may not be your cup of tea but to call him a charlatan is frankly pathetic.

Pathetic. reign yourself in.

Maybe it's a bit harsh but you get the point i'm trying to make: he is trading on a degree of false pretense.

My point was not about the results he achieved but the success he has had (or otherwise) implementing his football philosophy. Please highlight where at any point I was derogatory about his results at Swansea.

And so I assume Michael Laudrup's achievements at Swansea should be held in isolation too by your logic then?

So you say you were not being derogatory about his results?

By calling him a charlatan that seemed to pretty much encompass everything he's done in the game.

Looks to me like you're backing down a bit there, which is good. And right.

Nope, I meant simply that his achievements and the good game he talks do not match up to the reality, particularly in terms of being a possession football messiah.

If you want to get into the semantics over the 17th century definition of the word I used to describe this POV, then I'm really not interested.

I think Hansen hit the nail on the head last night when he said.... when you play Arsenal you need to hassle them, give them no time on the ball and stop them playing. When come up against a passing team that can pass better than you, you're in trouble.

Rodgers also admitted post match that they had a 15 year head start, so why the oxf*rd did he think they could out pass them? Not exactly great tactics.

When you've set out to be a passing team that's all you can do. Can't change the style if you are committed to it.

I'm sure you're not. What the hell do any of us do in this life? We talk ourselves up and make the most of our achievements - it's human nature. Why should he be any different? It's not as if his record isn't there for anyone to scrutinise is it?

Use an insulting description, get challenged, back down but try to make it look like you're not. Poor show.

But you can work your socks off to not give the better passing team time on the ball.

I don't have any problem with the term - it is a bit strong but essentially he has still to prove himself. It is an example of the crazy footballing times we live in when relatively little success gets you one of the best jobs in the country.

As for Swansea's season last year - they were on the downward slide before getting Siggy on loan. Without his goals and ability to link the midfield to the forward line Swansea were destined for a relegation dog fight and Rodgers certainly wouldn't have ended up at Anfield.

I don't think that's the emphasis, though - if you're setting your whole stall out to b a passing team, you'll concentrate on the passing, to the exclusion of everything else.

Huh? You seem to be suggesting that Rodgers not deserve credit for getting Sigurdsson in.

How does that work then?

reading are not pretty to watch but their effort, work rate and application of a game plan can not be faulted. I regard BR as a charlatan as well. He screwed up at Reading by trying to change too much too soon. Time will tell if he is going to make the same mistakes at Anfield so, 3 league games in is too early to gloat. However, to only have 2 strikers on the books and claim that the departure of Carroll was unknown smacks of something not quite right.

Most people have said that what BR needs is time in order to succeed but I can't see that happening. If he changes things a step at a time and results were half decent then who knows. LFC would have been better to have gone with Martinez to get the ball rolling in the right direction.
