This is Compass' reply to me about the mobile lager seller blocking the entrance to ladies loos and also my observation that they didn't seem totally prepared for a large crowd of people wanting food and drink, including at half time:

As it’s the beginning of the season, we do have new staff on site as a result of our summer recruitment drive. I can assure you that all of our staff have been provided with the training required to carry out the job, however, I’m sure you can appreciate there is no substitute for the fast paced environment of a half time period.

We endeavour to get through the queues as quickly as possible, however, we are not able to make our kiosks any larger or provide any more till points despite an increase in attendance of over 6000 fans compared to this point last year. Im glad you can see the benefit of our drinks hawkers, and over time we hope to increase this offering in our ongoing commitment to making the half time experience better for the fans. We will ensure their placement within the stands is in no way intrusive or an obstruction to the fans.

Our kiosks were, and will be fully staffed for the rest of our busy season. However, if there is any benefit to be seen to upping the staffing numbers, without it becoming counter productive to the operation inside the kiosk, then we will do so.

We will do whatever in our power to asure the fastest possible service.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to let us know your feedback.

That is a lofty reply. Using the increase in support for a reason to set themselves up for a fail is poor management of a predicted scenario.

It's also wrong, because 6k fans are not all in one area of the ground, they are spread around the ground. For instance, the East Stand was (mostly) full last season anyway so the increase in people in our stand would be minimal, compared to the obvious example of the west side of the South stand.

How big was this guy? he must have been about four people wide to successfully block one of those entrances

 due to standing in the middle of the entrance and having loads of blokes surrounding him wanting to buy a pint of "lager", the entrance was completely blocked and I had to fight my way through them. HTH.

They could increase the staff without increasing the number of tills. There is usually a "fetcher" who passes the drink/food to the till, but there isn't a 1:1 coverage, so some tills have to wait for their fetcher to finish getting stuff for another till before they get theirs.

weybridgewanderer chelsea were selling "beer vouchers" which might be an idea to suggest to the catering company.

When people arrive they can buy a beer and also by some vouchers for their halftime beer, reducing the amount of cash being handled at half time and, possibley, speeding up the service

This is surely the obvious answer. Reduces queuing times as fewer cash transactions, and the catering staff get a great indication each game as to what to prepare before the 15 minute rush. It works incredibly well at the theatre with pre-ordering interval drinks.

Another option which may work, is if you cannot increase the number of till points in the stand why not place additional till points outside of the concourse? Perhals a little catering van or a couple of additional geezers with barrels on their backs walking around the smoking sections at half time, or you could even allow a couple of these guys inside the stadium selling soft drinks, would keep some people out of the concourse queues.

Yes, but remember that the people walking round selling stuff block RL's route to the loo. More of these are only going to exacerbate the issue.

NB - They managed to have people walking through the stands selling beer and food at the Olympics athletics.

Yes, it's a "designated" football match. The Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol) Act 1985 only applies to football matches, not to any other sports.

Reading need to buy these and fit them in to all the beer outlets and train all the staff to deal with the cash quicker.

ISTR a few years ago when they tried to pilot e-cash cards to speed up transactions (in the Upper West) the HNA massive condemned that idea for every reason under the sun ....
