Would seem a little unfair given, from most accounts, Ayre was simply carrying out instruction from the owners.

Henry's comment about not wanting to sign players that would contribute only for two years was taken as a bit of a dig at Rodgers, and FSG were prepared only to pay £4m for him as a result.

Apparently the reason Allen took so long to sign for Liverpool was because the machinations of their new decision-making process on transfers to ages to determine if he was worth the £15m price tag.
