Silver Fox I can't remember the exact wording from the news reports last night but they were saying that Thatch was told in cabinet that South Yorks OB were covering up and lying and this was pretty much standard for them. i'd guess a government that cared about the victims would have done something about this

but then I'm probably an idiot

Indeed you are. Worse than that, you're as bad as the likes of Kes and Ideal in ignoring the conclusions of the report because they didn't say what you wanted them to say. They wanted it to codemn Liverpool fans, you, and other Fatcha haters wanted it to skewer her, it did neither.

Thatcher was given the opinion that the police evidence was questionable and didn't pursue it further. She did, however, commission and accept the Taylor report which was hugely critical of the police.

I don't doubt that thatcher hated football and football fans and would, instinctively, believe police over football fans but that is a million miles away from the theory that she personally oversaw a cover up, a suggestion that was dismissed by the panel in the first few minutes of their press conference.

I think trying to politicise this issue is pretty low but as the issues come up, you have to wonder what on earth Jack Straw's enquiry did in 1997/98 which seems to have either failed to uncover or completely ignored many of the issues that arose yesterday.

Says it all really doesn't it. One of the most ineffective and insignificant people to have ever held public office.

He has a stammer.

His Dad refused to fight in WW2 until the Russians were on our side.

His son is an utter bell.

Now that we know it wasn't really the football fans fault for the crush and with all the new technology, I can only see the safe standing campeign getting stronger.

The only safe standing that would be permitted would be similar to that used in Germany. Forget about huge terraces holding 30,000 plus. They won't be seen in this country again.

Will Boris now apologise for his infamous Spectator editorial?

Rumpole Whatever the rights and wrongs of his previous statements, there is no doubt whatsoever that Liverpool enjoys a why-always-us-victim-culture unparalleled anywhere else in the UK. Rivalled only by NYC since 2001.

In any case, whatever happens in terms of safety:

seating>standing

If the report is correct (and we have no reason to doubt it) it was ineffectual policing and crown control that led to the issues - it must be easier to control a seated crowd than a standing one. I'm not saying that the FSF's proposed seating or whatever is *unsafe* I'm just saying that seating is safer.

I'd like to be able to stand at football, but I don't see this changing anything.

Seating is only safer if people sit in it. Not if, as currently, many continue to stand in it.

On the Sun - I notice that their profound apology is not top of the points, or particularly prominent amongst them. Maybe I'm being picky because it's a Murdoch rag.

Even it that were true, you don't have to go to read safety research or apply some intelligence.

I was a bit surprised by this too.

Clearly, The Sun has no option but to unreservedly apologise as it has. Given that, if I were them, I would have done it in such a way that their sincerity and their realisation of the enormity of the offence caused could not possibly be questioned and that no one could say "that's not good enough". By having it as a list of points, and not even the main one, they haven't done that and will inevitably receive more criticism.

That said, I don't think anything that is done going forward will ever by sufficient for the campaigners say they are fully satisfied no matter how many are convicted and whether or not the inquest verdict is changed.

Germany has far more "real" terracing than safe standing.

The size of the terrace is also a non-issue. The much larger kop end at Hillsborough had no problems.

so it's taken 23 years for a report to confirm what everybody already knew what the cover up by the police is unforgivable and truly shocking and I hope the families of the dead now sue South Yorks Police for compensation.

I am still struggling to find the trolls on this thread.

I don't think anyone is disputing South Yorkshire police and the authorities were well and truly out of order for the cover up and they should be brought to justice. Or the fact it was such a tragic loss of life which could have been prevented. But as soon as you question Liverpool fans part on the day. You are a troll it seems.

Maybe that is because the independent report, the prime minister, Boris Johnson, you name it, have all completely exonerated the fans and said their behaviour was not in any way to blame.

The fact that you persist with this slur while greater minds than yours have accepted it is untrue, reflects very poorly on you and must be thoroughly insulting to any right thinking person.

But there is video evidence of Liverpool fans pushing and shoving outside the Leppings Lane end. All I'm saying is, if people were more patient, instead of turning up late and being intent on getting in the ground before kick off - the crush outside the ground wouldn't have happened. If you're in a queue for something you simply wait behind the person in front and when they move, you move. unfortunately people were pushing and shoving their way through which led to the crush outside, which had a domino effect to what happened next. However this is very difficult to prove as people will say there should have been measures in place to prevent this. Whilst this is correct, patience and consideration of those around you would have also helped the situation.
