The back 5 against West Brom

by TBM » 16 Sep 2012 20:15

Knee jerk maybe but my back 5 against West Brom would be

Feds
Gunter Mariappa Gorkss Shorey

I feel Pearce/Gorkss/Harte is too slow and will struggle against Long an' co

leicsRoyal Can Mariappa play left back?

Think he's CB and RB but he has pace........something we're lacking. We need to use him - he was attracting interest from Arsenal, Newcastle etc last season

Wouldn't drop Pearce, thought he was ok today. Maybe Mariappa in for Gorkss though, and Cummings left back.

Pearce has been one of our best players so far this season, would rather him than Gorkss but agree that Mariappa deserves a chance.

Gunter was terrible first half but decent second half. He doesn't at all confident on the ball. Not sure he's any better than Cummings on what I've seen of him. Stick for the moment.

Problem with Harte is that McAnuff had to cover him far too much today - effectively we were playing two left-backs and even then we couldn't stop Lennon. Any suggestion that his set pieces make up for it are squarely shunned by today's dismal efforts.

Goalkeeper... McCarthy's distribution today was woeful - at least three kicks straight out for a throw-in and the rest were mopped up easily enough by Spurs. Worth another chance I feel, but he doesn't seem to instil confidence in the defensive unit.

In conclusion...

McCarthy
Gunter Pearce Mariappa Shorey

Is there really that much difference in terms of pace between Harte and Shorey? Last season Nicky Shorey was awful for us which is why he was eventually released. As well as the superb performances from Liam Ridgewell. I can't see us giving you much grief down the wings, especially with Odemwingie now out for three matches so you might be best to continue with Ian Harte afterall. I've not seen much of him defensively to comment as to who is better between the two but given Harte currently has the shirt, Brian McDermott must obviously have faith in him.

Seeing as we're talking West Brom, I'd give Harte another game.

If he has a shocker next week, look at Mariappa for the Newcastle game.

Gorkks wasn't too impressive either but again i wouldn't do anything knee jerk for next week.

We can't afford to do this against teams like West Brom but I mused on having a back 6 to cover any mistakes against bigger teams.

McCarthy/Feds
Gunter Pearce Gorkks Marriappa Harte
McCleary Guthrie Leigertwood Jobi/Jimmy
Pog

I just liked the sound of it, although I doubt it would ever work

Can easily be switched to 442 obvs. But this would only be against the Chelsea away type games. I just think it'd be interesting to see how we did tbh
