It's funny how what Feds did last season is dismissed but what McCarthy did two seasons ago is seen as a relevant reason why he should be in the team.

Alexander Litvinenko Nope, but you'd hope that his girlfriend would have the common sense to realise that springing to his defence on a public forum was not only bound to be found out but was also bound to cause him far more grief than keeping schtum and playing the party line would.

And also that Twitter enables dressing-room discontent to be made public far, far more easily than it used to - and the club's carefully cultivated image of peace, harmony and togetherness is now in sever danger of being seen as a sham.

Yep, I'd agree with all of that. Which makes all this hullaballoo the gf's fault, not his, doesn't it?

I think the debate has moved on from who should be playing.

It's now about who's committed to the team vs. who's committed to themselves.

She's poured petrol onto the flames, definitely - but he has a tacit responsibility to make sure that she doesn't damage his reputation or the reputation of his employers - or damage his career, for that matter.

Girlfriends makes silly remark on twitter
Fans pick up on it
Comments pasted onto forums
Local media get a story
National media get a story

By the time this ends the story won't be about a girlfriends silly remark on twitter!

Now in a lot wider forum than HNA.

Adam Federici's girlfriend takes to Twitter to vent her frustrations at Federici being dropped on Sunday. fb.me/1jHiOBluQ

ADAM Federici's girlfriend has launched a stinging attack on Reading FC after the Australian goalkeeper was dropped for the game with Tottenham Hotspur.

Following a couple of costly errors against Stoke City and Chelsea, Federici found himself replaced by Alex McCarthy on Sunday.

And his girlfriend Micaela Gardner was far from impressed with the decision, saying on Twitter: "Football has left me feeling totally numb and empty inside! For once I have NO explanation! #noloyalty #absolutejoke.

"Unbelievable!!! You need thick skin for success!!"

Another friend, Stephanie Gardner, also let her views be known on the social network site, saying: "Reading FC absolute joke of a club unbelievable the way they can treat there {sic} players #lost3-1 tactical decision did not work #badmanagement."

Was mentioned on the 8.30 sports bulletin on BBCRB by Adie Williams followed by Peachey inviting comments - absolutely no reference made to it subsequently in the Peach show so, presumably, they were requested to drop it.

At a push you can argue the families tweets were done without his blessing but didn't he also do something similar on this Instagram thing (that I know nothing about)?

This is probably just the first of the bullshit problems you get in the Premier League that you don't in the lower leagues.

Remember how mercenary some of our players got in 07, how quickly heads get turned, how much more every little thing is scrutinised. So it begins.

Some really weird shit on this thread.

Federici slept on floors, worked his nuts off without a contract for long spells & through this dedication earned himself a lucrative contract and has established himself as a fine keeper. He didn't become our keeper because we became a charity all of a sudden or because he wrote a nice letter to Jimmy Saville.

Likewise Reading FC have invested time in his development and are paying him handsomely for the strides he has made.

As far as loyalty goes, neither party owe a particular debt to the other one. Up until now it's been a mutually beneficial relationship.

Oh and as much as some may want it to be, this is no longer Victorian England. Of course if he's unhappy he's gonna complain to his missus and if she wants to use social media to say her piece then theres not an awful lot he can do about it.

It seems to me, no-one has really handled this particularly well, from McDermott down. Welcome to the Premier league circus where keeping a low profile is no longer an option.

Her's and Federici's fault in my book. Why would she put it on twitter if she didn't want people to see? They both know the deal with Twitter and how it works, that's why he's no longer on it afterall isn't it?

Being the other half of public figure, with the rewards that go with that position, bring with it the need to be a bit more aware of what people will pick up on. It's Federici's responsibility to make sure that's understood and I'm sure they both knew that what they were saying would be picked up on because both his Instagram and her Twitter are followed by Reading fans who they've interacted with.

The issue here isn't perhaps so much that she's let the cat out of the bag but more that Federici can feel so let down and aggreived at losing his position after such a poor start to the season and, quite obviously, carry a knock that's effected his performances.

I don't think McDermott has handled this that well to be honest, but he's not been helped by the players.

How should he have handled it? I would imagine he would have thought Federici was professionally enough to accept his decision. I wouldn’t expect him to be happy about it, but I certainly wouldn’t expect him to say anything in public other than perhaps that he is desperate to work hard and win his place back.

My take on what probably happened was BMc said to Federici something to the effect of "I'm going to give Alex a try for a game or two - we'll say you're injured to avoid embarrassment, if you like." But, for some reason, Federici refused to play along with the "injured" story, and went public with being "dropped".

If he'd just said he was injured and quietly fought to get his place back then everything would have been so much simpler and easier for everyone - as well as making it easier for him to get his place back in due course.

But he seems to think it important to have the starting place almost guaranteed - rather than being part of a squad.

poor show from feds to moan on ta public forum.
i wouldnt have dropped him yet. but if he makes 3 howlers in 3 games, he's got to realise its a possibility.
if hes refused to go on the bench thats ridiculous and should be transfer listed. but there is no evidence of that

not bothered by his daft missus, can say what she likes.

Well that would be pretty naive management. If you're dropping someone because you think they're not currently up to the job then come out and say that.

You may make a pretty tough call and then magic up some smokescreen to somehow cover it up. You might just get away with it in the Championship but not under the scrutiny of the Premier league.

Depends. If you know someone has a pretty big ego, you might offer them a cover-up story to make things look better for them. So players might welcome that.

But when you stick to that cover-up story and the person concerned doesn't is when you get exactly the sort of problems we're seeing now.

it's quite depressing the inevitable twatishness of footballers and their squawking women. Brian's the boss, he makes the decisions - he's the one who'll get the boot not the goalkeeper.

Yep - on BBCRB he said Federici had an injury and the physio had advised he didn't play until it was resolved so as to avoid further/later damage. The intimation (that i took - it wasn't explicitly stated as such) was that he could have played but might have made things worse so they were giving it a chance to heal properly.

What a difference between his attitude and that of Alex . When Feds was injured Alex came in and did really well had one bad match and Feds was brought back. As I far as I remember, Alex did n´t complain publicly and has been very patient waiting for another chance. Probably best to get rid of Feds if he is going to rely on his girlfriend to leak information through the social network. The only club in the Premiership who might buy him would be Liverpool, at all the other ones he would just be a bench warmer.
