I'd say it was an ok squad for what the previous manager wanted to do with it, although it under performed due to a lack of goals last season.

It now needs more strengthening because the new manager wants them to play quite differently. That, and the weaknesses at the back, aren't cheap to address and Rodgers hasn't got the kind of money to fix those problems quickly.

We all saw at Reading how difficult it can be to change the way a team plays when the players in the squad have been brought together with a different gameplan in mind.

Raheem Sterling seems like a good prospect, but is he a mincer?

Pepe the Horseman
Stuboo I perceive that Liverpool are starting to come good. They are likely to struggle to score many goals until they get reinforcments, but they seem to be creating more chances and working much better as a team. Impressed with Shelvey - he's come on a long way. And the We Are Liverpool programme is a fascinating insight into a premiership club and player's lives.

No, I'm just naturally a genius. :D

Sandman, this post was written whilst completely sober. I guess that makes it even worse in your eyes. :D

cmonurz f Dalglish's buys were any good, the likes of Suso and Wisdom wouldn't be starting league games.

Bollox. That's just one person's views. Not selecting them doesn't make it definitive. Another manager could easily play Dalglish's buys.

And you keep up the Dalglish-hate, the greatest Liverpool player ever and one of the greatest British players ever, plus one of Liverpool's greatest ever managers. But of course he's just an idiot who doesn't know a good footballer from a bad one.

I think the main problem at Liverpool was that they overpaid for Players. Carol, Downing??? Even in the Rafa era I think their transfer policy was a bit dodgy. They seem to be rectifying this now though. What I mean is that it was mainly the chairman or the director of footballs fault for allowing too much money to be spent on players that were not worth it.

Dalglish-hate? You don't read this board much. I idolise the guy, as a Liverpool fan in my youth. But he didn't do very well last season.

He's not what you'd really have called up to date, all his recent failure means is that he wasn't up to the job anymore. But then it's hardly surprising when he hadn't had a management job for what? A decade? And just waltzed straight back in with massive expectation and a club that was woefully declined compared to his past glories.

^the grass isn't always greener. To think in some people's eyes Benitez was considered a failure.

He won the CL with Traore, Biscan and Smicer.

Dalglish tarnished his reputation with a lot of Liverpool fans after his media outbursts and the manner in which he defended Suarez last season.

Doesn't change the fact that 2/3rds of the players he signed were shit.

Those were the days, when being a good coach could take you places. Which is probably fair praise of Benitez, a very good coach who took an average team further than many bosses would have.

My only gripe about that period for Liverpool is that they were only ever competing on one front. Their rivals Utd/Arsenal/Chelsea
were competing in Europe/FA cup/League at the same time. Liverpool were able to rest players and had less games as they were
either out of the competition or had no chance of winning the league

Definitely. A massive 37 points behind Chelsea when Liverpool won the CL in 2005. What a 'very good' coach.

Former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero says he turned down the chance to join Liverpool before moving to Sydney FC this year out of respect to the Italian fans who died at the Heysel disaster in 1985
