Royal Lady And personally, I think it shows Guthrie cares about wanting to play - he could sit on his arse and just collect his over inflated pay packet - but he's not happy doing that and as I said on another thread, McD is cutting off his nose to spite his face at the moment - playing Tabb when he could be playing Guthrie is one of the strangest decisions McD has made imo.

not strange at all when you see the way the team looks with either player in the middle.
tabb played very well on saturday, and fit into the teams style: stoke and chelsea ganmes aside, guthrie hasnt played well, constantly gives the ball away, doesnt track back or work hard, constantly moans and whinges during th egame at the players, and after the game on twitter & to the manager.

yes its god that he cares- you wouldnt expect anyone to be happy at being dropped. but brian isnt in the habit of being a dictator manager, and strict disciplinarian. if hes felt the need to banish guthrie from training, its because guthrie has stepped beyond the bounds of respectful conduct.

This actually isn't true is it.

well if you want to be literal about it, he does do the odd other thing, so it isnt CONSTANT.......

in the spurs game he spent more time petulantly waving his arms around and having a go at the other players for not always passing to him than he did trying to do something about the way spurs were slicing through us at will
and he did use twitter to moan about not playing Vs newcastle, buty i said at the time i had no problem with that
for it to have gobne this extra step further he must have over stepped a line with mcdermott in terms of respect.

bracksroyal10 My point is surely you can understand Guthrie's frustration at the situation,

yes. im sure brian does too
if it was just a case of sheer frustration brian wouldnt have reacted in this way. he always comes out and says so- "id be concerned if a player wasnt upset at being dropped" etc
but for it to go this far, it means there must have been a stepping over the line by guthrie in terms of respect

This is what makes me think he has near enough been promised regular football. If he was promised this at the start of the year and BMD has turned around and gone against his word. Of course the guy is going to be raging.

im pretty sure AZ and BMD would of given him guaranteed first team football or some form of guarantee otherwise there is no way he would of joined us.

stop making stuff up

Would hardly call it making up stuff if you actually read what I say there to suggest I know any information for a fact just purely speculating.

At the end of the day not that I know what was said but like Pog's deal surely there was something said that must of made Guthrie think and say I am 100% joining Reading FC out of all the clubs that were after him.

Lets face it surely we weren't the club at the top of that list im sure teams like Villa, Stoke, Fulhams a good group of mid table teams all had a look. This leads me to believe something was surely said to make Guthrie opt for us as I am pretty sure these clubs would of matched his wage demands too and could get away with not making a guarantee of first team football.

But on the other hand I must say I am very pleased Tabb is starting to reap the rewards of his work rate. Played very well when we beat QPR at Loftus Road and was surprised not to see him feature in the next game following on from that.

Mr.T10 McDermott has spoken out... http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/foot ... 30639.html

Now fecking play him! Would love to see Karacan and Guthrie in the middle but might have to wait a few weeks until we see that paring.

Which means that either Brian is telling porkies, or Fordham got it wrong.....either way seems like a storm in a teacup to me...

pretty sure mcdermottt wouldnt make that kind of promise to anyone

guthries problem at newcastle, was not being played regularly.to me its clear he looked at our midfield, and backed himself to have enough quality to force himself past them, and play regular football, which is all he wants to do.

agree on tabb

Melonhead - any need for the 3-4 post in a row all the time?

Questions still have to be asked as to why he wasn't even on the bench on Sat when he was the only other fit midfielder? Also, why was he speeding away moments after the game had finished?

i think we did try to accomodate guthire, and change our style to fit his, in the first few games.
the trouble is hes not good enough to build a side around, and not worth changing our style just to suit him.

So a wasted/wrong signing then.

Funny how so many people (I'm not saying you were one) were celebrating his signing but are now saying we are better off without him.

rubbish

i like him, think hes a decent player, and if his attitude is right, he can help us play in different ways,be creative with, and keep hold of the ball better, which we sorely need.
he was impressive in the pre season friendly, and against stoke and chelsea, since then hes done less than nothing, and doesnt deserve any special treatment, or a guaranteed start

& if hes been disruptive, and disrespectful to the manager, just cos hes been left out of three ganmes, then i have no choice but to begin thinking if he carrys on with that we'll be better off without him.

In what way rubbish? Could well be that the reason he's 'done less than nothing' is that McDermott was demanding he change his natural style of play. If that was the case then is McDermott playing at? As I said on another thread, it's like paying good money for a screw driver and then trying to use it as a hammer! Furthemore, this would point to a wasted/wrong signing.

As someone else pointed out, it looks pretty obvious the club gave Guthrie the big sell to attract him (interrupting his honeymoon?). If he has then been told to change the way he plays (was he told that was a requirement before being signed?) and has now been dropped, I can understand him being more than fed up.

I don't think this is going to turn out to be McDermott's finest hour in terms of handling signings/players. I also suspect it might be symptomatic of the increasing pressure that he probably feels under.

McDermott said this morning: "There's no bust-up. He wasn't selected to play for the game.

"So, I don't know where the reports are coming from. Danny was training yesterday."

Well Brian, if you want an answer to that, I suggest you have a look at getreading. Alternatively try asking Mr Fordham!

Really surprised the club's Head of Communications hasn't told you already - he must monitor the media.

Have to say I feel sorry for Guthrie, it's obvious he has talent and can play at this level but Heston doesn't play that way and until there are more personnel changes (or bye bye Brian) its not likely he's ever going to fit in.

I think November could be a decisive month in more ways than one.

I'm not reading through all 8 pages so apologies if I'm repeating what others have said.

None of this Guthrie situation surprises me to be honest. From the moment he joined the team he struck me as the kind of player who will look excellent against poorer teams who give him all the time he needs to pick out passes etc, but that he would struggle badly against most midfields in the Premier League. Add to this the fact that he's not nearly as talented as I believe he thinks he is and has a seemingly poor work ethic, plus the fact that he lacks the intelligence to not make snide comments on Twitter, then you have a disaster waiting to happen.

Snowball Back to Tabby

Three starts 2-2, 3-3 and a 3-2 cup win where he had a big part in one of the goals

only other appearance 18 minutes as a sub where we also won 3-2

I think he's under-rated and always has been. He's a great pro.

Agree. He's a good little player and was one of our best players on Saturday.

its rubbish cos he is a good player, and may still fit into our style, and help us progress/be more creative/keep hold of the ball as he was brought in to do
its entirely possible he is the right player, with the right abilities, who just needs to adapt slightly, and adjust his attitude.
Vs stoke and chalsea he worked well, kept the ball, created, and looked a gr8 acquisition. a few games later hes lost it a bit,and gone all sulky.
im just saying theres plenty of time for him to get back to how he started, AND try and do some of the tracking back and covering.hustling we also need him to do.

i think brian knows its fordham, what he is saying is he has no idea why or how fordham(the worst reporter witha track record of making stuff up and being chronically wrong, ) has come up with this nonsense

It's Fordham's job to report on what's going on by also to sell newspapers / direct people to the Get Reading website. It's (one of) BM's jobs to keep any conflicts private and play them down to media and fans. I suspect what has happened is somewhere in between both versions.

I think he will fit in, but he won't play every game. All he has to do is play Brian's way. It might be that so far he has tried to play his own way and is slow to take seriously what Brian is telling him to do. There are always players like that, who would rather do their own thing; they just need time to come to terms. In my opinion, both McAnuff and Kebe were disinclined to press much in the early days, but they buy into that approach now. (I don't think McAnuff would be where he is now if he hadn't done so.)

There is nothing in Guthrie's game that should suffer by more tackling and more pushing up the pitch; he will still be able to pass, and his ability in that department will be very welcome. A Guthrie who presses and tackles as well as passing would be just up McDermott's street. I back Brian to get the best out of Guthrie before long.

I wouldn't read all that into it. But it certainly seems that Guthrie's best season was in the Championship. Clearly he can play at prem level, but he has never kept a regular first team place in the past.
