People stop need to saying ' Who would have thought this time last year we would be in the prem' etc etc. But we are here now, and its Brians job to keep us here. With the Prem getting more lucrative as of next season there is no doubt AZ will want a win on Sunday or it really could be Bye Bye Brian. Hello Harry?

Watching the TV interviews last night and hearing the radio this morning it looks and sounds like BM has completely lost his confidence - and who could blame him. It seems the stuffing has been knocked out of him. Not sure how he feels today but if the manager feels that way then there is little chance of him being able to motivate the players.

Quickly bring in either a Defensive coach and/or an ex player to help him get through the next few months - a la Gooding or even Dillon. Whatever it is pretty clear he needs help and fast especially to sort out the Pearce/Guthrie situation.

Royal Lady Do you know what I'd do if I were McD and still in the job for Sunday? I'd bring in Guthrie and tell him no uncertain terms that THIS is his moment, he plays out of his oxf*rd skin and shows everyone what we've been missing. I'd drop Gorkss for Pearce. Pearce has done nothing wrong when he's played and I don't blame him for not wanting to sign a new contract - so maybe Pearce will sign after Sunday, when he realises he'll be first choice again.

I'd speak to Hammond/AZ and tell them I need a new coach, with proven experience at PL level and shunt Gibbs out. There's no room in football for sentiment. This is a business. He needs to be tough, starting on the training ground this morning and he needs to take another look at the tactics of last night and where it went so badly wrong and ensure that we NEVER make the same mistakes again. That's what I'd do.

And I'm available if anyone wants to give me the call!

agree about Gibbs - said as much on another thread. Someone has to be culpable for the comedy defending. Scoring 8 goals in 72 hours & not winning either game is quite something.

1) keep the faith. Now's not the time to change horses, not with this run of games coming up.
2) Bringing in a new defensive coach might be an idea - that's where the change is needed.

It's not just that, you have to have the correct players and tactics to make a defensive plan work. The back four were crying out to have a Makelele type player in front of them last night to shore it up. There was no connection between midfield and defence.

I have to say the lack of depth in our coaching staff does play on my mind, as far as i know we dont have any full time coaches for each position?. Given what Reading are experiencing at the moment, i would have thought having some fresh impetus or a few allies alongside Brian would help in what is a very lonely job for him right now. He only has Gibbs as someone to turn to, so surely he needs more of a unit to work with??

As per usual, the propensity for over analysis of tactics and personnel abounds.
I'm sure that I'm not the only one who gets on here who's watched Reading over many decades, and heard the post match comments of many different Royals managers.
Well, there's one common word that has endured the passing of decades, and has come out of the mouths of all the managers we've ever had.
That word is Confidence.
When players have confidence, they miraculously have more time on the ball, their passing is more accurate, their speed of thought increaases, their shots more powerful.
Without it, everything is rushed, the first touch is dodgy, and the ball is treated like it is radioactive.
We've all seen both over the years.
Last night, we were good value to be 4-0 up against a dire Arsenal. Anyone with half of a brain cell knew that they would come back at us, and when they did, the players slowly retreated further and further into that shell of lacking confidence. The Arsenal team smelt blood, and the inevitable happened.

You can write the scoreline off as a freak result, but the psychological effect on the playing squad as a whole is more significant.
I'm sure Mark Hughes will be driving this home to his players.
Brian has a hell of a job on his hands now.

Vision
bracksroyal10 no other team would of given up a lead that big take a look at the bigger picture.

I think you'll find the team we played last night did, not so long ago. They also conceded 8 in a game not so long ago and I remember everyone saying how their manager had lost the plot and had to go. They finished 3rd.

Last night is on McD because he really needed to change formation in the 2nd half when we were put under pressure and didn't. However some people need to get a grip here. We were going to struggle this season regardless of who our manager was and McD has certainly made mistakes but we need to have a long hard look at ourselves as a club if the bloke that has given us so much with so little to work with, isn't given every chance to prove he can repeat the feats of the previous seasons.

Yeah point granted but theres just going down 8-0 and having an absolute shocker against one of if not the best in England (Man Utd) and then theres having a 4-0 lead and losing 7-5.

I can't believe all the people defending Mcdermott on here. Why are people content with going down to the Championship? We surely want to push towards the best level that we possibly can be at just like every other normal club. Otherwise ..... whats the point and why should Anton bother investing in a club that is happy to sit at the same level because quite frankly SJM might as well stay on as owner if thats what the majority want to do.

Ok it was only the co cup but if im one of only a few that feels embarrassed after throwing away a 4-0 lead and then losing then something is very wrong with the general mindset of some of our fans. Don't get me wrong I expect us to struggle it was never going to be easy but all these people saying I am happy with Championship football?

I can take a loss but its the way we have lost matches and thrown away 2 goal leads that I can't stand. What are the players supposed to think psychologically the next time they are 4-0 up against someone because lets face it that game will be in the back of their heads the next time it does happen.

Same as the odds I almost got for a full time draw at half time last night, before they dived to 17-2...

No wonder he's lost his confidence. He was an utter joke last night. Directly responsible for a result that could be a fatal wound in our campaign; how can we score any amount of goals and be confident ever again?

He needs to drop his stubborn pride and pathetic grudges against players.
He needs to stop the stupid decisions and subs during games and use a bit of f/cking common sense.
He needs to end his sad favouritism.
He needs to learn some new f/cking tactics.

Or he needs to walk. Fed up listening to him excuse losing a lead any manager in the country could have held on to with an ounce of f/cking intelligence.

Moron.

Yeah, I wouldn't stay in the same house too long once I knew RL had worked out which one it was.

Did someone on here seriously suggest Mick 'I'll take anything going' McCarthy over BM?

I took 10/1 for Arsenal to qualify at 3-0 and 20/1 at 4-1. I'll be using my winnings to erase my memory of last night.

Same applies for Redknapp too as I don't like the guy but I think he is a good manager who would produce the goods and we might actually start to play good football under him as well.
