“We shall see what happens this week. There is a possibility that there will be talks between Alex, his representative and Nick Hammond. When I first made the decision to leave Alex out (his contract situation) had no bearing whatsoever.

“Alex has a choice to make and so does his agent. Sean Morrison is now in the team, proved a point and proved he can play at this level. He is very much in contention to play
because we know he can do it. He’s committed and has a three-year deal.”

The implication is pretty obvious here.

Not to me. There are 2 issues raised in that statement. One is that Alex Pearce is in discussion over a new contract. The other is that he is in the squad but not in the team. I do sense that there is a lot of supposition in many of the stories that excite so much attention of here and that this might also be such a case.

As has been said, we are not in a great position in the league at the moment. Why would any manager not pick a player he thought was best for the team simply because he might not have him in th squad in 2 - 3 months time? Maybe, just maybe, in this case the manager doesn't think he is the best option at present? We may not agree but we don't pick the team.

Well put mate.
And it could well be that the reason why Brian doesn't think Alex is the best option is because of the player's reaction to the "sounding out" by bigger, rival clubs. His "head" could be in the wrong place. Sidwell saw life beyond Reading, and dealt with it positively. Other players we had at the time didn't.
For me, having the manager mention by name a rival for Alex's shirt in an interview about Alex speaks volumes. Brian's rattling sabres.

So McDermott has not been picking Pearce as a result of him not signing a new contract quick enough.

McDermott getting closer to the sack.

Wouldn't have thought it was McD's decision - he won't be sacked until at least end of season (my view, don't bite!)

Or perhaps Brian, who sees Alex in training every day, has noticed a change in attitude and application in the player as a result of the player's agent whispering in his ear.
Does that not ring any bells around here?
And if you were the manager, who was on the staff when something similar happened under a previous management regime, not learn from that experience ?
Coppell had his favourites, who played regardless.
This manager is dealing with it his way, good luck to him. It's his job that's on the line, not the players.

We're still pretty small time if Brian is involved in this level of players' contract negotiations.

To my mind this should be dealt with by the club/Hammond as a separate issue and Brian should be left to deal with the football side of things, which centres on selecting the best 11 players available to him every week.

I remember seeing an interview with 'Arry last season who said he couldn't even tell you what individual players were earning.

For Pearce not to be involved in any League or Cup matches for even a half in the last few weeks having not really put a foot wrong previously tells me something is badly wrong. It also smacks of horrible short-termism and naivity that this issue has only come up now. The club must've had an inkling of this in the summer so we've effectively gone into a Premier League season with two recognised senior centre halves in Gorkss and Mariappa with Morrison for cover.

Absolute dog sh1t.

yeah, we are a terrible club, who clearly know nothing about running a football team, or business, as demonstrated by the last ten years of appalling achievement levels

a player can be tapped up by another club, and refuse to sign a new contract because he is intent on leaving
and the manager can make a decision on not playing him based on that which is entirely football based, while not getting involved in the negotiations etc

ie if brian thinks he doesnt want to be at the club, and deciding he doesnt want players playing for him tat dont wantto be there

@Melonhead (in the sand?)

You seem to be incapable of accepting any negativity shown by anyone towards decsions made (or not made) by the club.

No one is saying that the club always make terrible decisions and is badly run, but unfortunately for you this is a forum where we all get to air our opinions.

But if you think we're going to remain a Premier League team running the club the way we have in the past, I happen to think you're wrong.

It's not a matter of whether they're right or wrong - it's more a matter that like everyone elses' opinions on here - they're completely inconsequential.

We could take this to 100 pages!

Anyway, it still isn't an opinion it is a perception or a belief. So there!

It is my opinion that Reading is the best football team for me to support. It is a fact that Reading FC is in 18th place in the PL.

Of course they can be. Opinions about subject things like personal preference or degrees of quality are less likely to be wrong than opinions about but still can be if they're based on false information in the first place.
