Oh, and btw, lost in all the buzz about the games Tabb, Morrison and Alf had we would have never got the win against Everton if it weren't for Feds.

There is no debate. We have 2 keepers we can call on to do the job...and I never doubted that being anything but fact.

Feds distribution is way better than McCarthys IMO - great low flighted ball in the first half yesterday straight to Roberts was a stand out...

That's why there is a debate! We do have 2 keepers who can do the job. It is a tough choice for Brian when they are both fully fit.
Let the debate be good-humoured because they are both good and there is less to choose between them than many posters would have you believe.

I don't think may people doubt that Feerici, on form, is a very good keeper, and occasionally a match-saver.

I don't think may people doubt that McArthy, on form, is a very good keeper, and occasionally a match-saver.

Without taking sides, the only difference for me is I think McArthy has a greater amount of improvement in him.

So, for example, if a Prem club came sniffing, interested in buying one of our keepers, IMO it would be

McArthy/Andersen
Andersen/McArthy
then Feds

But if Feds was unequivocally our Number 1 keeper, I wouldn't be unhappy

For me McCarthy is the better keeper, there isn't too much between them though.....and Feds was excellent yesterday.

Think Feds was great yesterday although still think he's too reluctant to come off his line - for the goal I think he could have come and claimed it .... but maybe I'm being harsh?

Don't like him, but yes, I think you are being harsh.

I've got to be honest. I thought exactly the same.

Thought this too at the time, from Y26, but seeing it on TV it's not so clear
It is a weakness for him though no doubt

So what weakness does McCarthy have to justify him not being re-instated as first choice when fit?

There's nothing close about this comparison, McCarthy is the better 'keeper by a distance, is years younger and would not have conceded yesterday's goal.

As the transfer window gets closer, we will be in danger of losing one of the academy's best ever products if we can't provide first team football for a young 'keeper who has produced at least one world class save in recent weeks.

In Long and Gylfi we've seen too many good young players leave recently but Premiership status should give us real hope of hanging onto McCarthy............................ that ain't going to happen if he's sat on the bench as Mr Average Federici's No2.............................he can sit on far better benches than ours earning much better money.

so who would actually sign McCarthy as their first team keeper in the Prem?

There are keepers ahead of him in the England pecking order in the Championship.

Just wondering like

Experience?

04 Aldershot
45 Yeovil
03 Brentford
14 Reading
10 Ipswich
07 Leeds
01 Reading

84 TOTAL all lower reaches followed by 7 Prem Appearances this season plus 1 cup game.

32 Championship and 7 Premiership games? Maybe that's what is perceived as a (relative) weakness?

Federici

02 Reading
10 Southend
15 RFC
52 RFC
38 RFC
47 RFC

164 TOTAL, the vast majority for RFC at Championship level, plus this season's games

You're right why bother signing anyone with less than a hundred appearances! I suppose the interest in Zaha will stop now as well.

That's only because Dave Watson was the England and Birmingham goalkeeping coach. Given that McCarthy has outperformed Butland at every level they have played at, and is now playing better in the top flight than Butland is in the Championship, I would be surprised if Butland is picked ahead of McCarthy for the next England squad if they both continue their recent form and remain injury free.

Fielding was being picked ahead of McCarthy for the U21s and seniors, which was probably right as Fielding was better at the time (but also older). Whilst it is impossible to tell if Fielding is ahead of McCarthy now, McCarthy remained on the Olympic shortlist for longer. Fielding also hasn't been too hot for Derby since moving there permanently.

Your best shout would be Jason Steele of Middlesbrough, who has been picked ahead of McCarthy at youth level and for the Olympics, but even then, I think McCarthy's form in the top flight would get him the nod if both were fit and there was a goalkeeping slot free.

ok

so my other question was (bearing in mind Woodcotes concerns) ...who would sign Mc in preferrence to what they already have (and why would he sign to sit on a bench).
