A decent incentive from Brentford got me thinking.

If you were used to paying £18 a ticket and this offer came up, what would you pay?

Brentford Football Club have launched a ground-breaking ticket promotion for their final game before Christmas and will be raising money for charity at the same time.
The Bees welcome Stevenage to Griffin Park for an npower League One game on Saturday December 22.
Both teams are currently in the promotion shake-up and the match could see two of the top six in action.
Brentford will be running a special promotion for the match with supporters able to pay whatever they are able to get a ticket for the match.
The ‘Pay What You Can’ scheme will see advance match tickets for Brentford fans sold at the price the supporter wants to pay.
The minimum price for a ticket will be £1 and every ticket, whether for adult, senior, student or junior, in The Bees United Stand, The BIAS Stand and The Bill Axbey Stand will be available.
When more than £5 is paid for a ticket, the Club will donate 50 per cent of the total paid, excluding VAT, to the charity Sport Relief.
It is believed this will be the first Football League game to be priced in this way.
Mark Devlin, Brentford FC Chief Executive, said: “We have run two ticket promotions in the past 12 months and have been very happy with the increased attendance we have seen as a result.
“A home game three days before Christmas is one that we know will stretch the finances of our supporters.
“At this time of year there are demands on time and money.
“We hope that with this pricing, our supporters who would struggle to afford to attend will be able to do so.
“And, those who are in a position to pay a bit more will see half their admission fee going to charity.
“There will also, hopefully, be new faces inside Griffin Park and we welcome them.
“I do not recall another club announcing such a promotion – we believe this is first Football League game where fans pay what they can.
“Griffin Park has been a fantastic place to watch football this year.
“Brentford have the best home record in League One while Stevenage’s away record is formidable.
“This promises to be a game to savour and we hope for a bumper festive crowd, making lots of noise, supporting The Bees and raising money for Sport Relief.
“We anticipate a high demand for tickets and we hope we can sell out all home areas.”

Tickets will go on sale at 10am tomorrow, Tuesday November 20, and will be limited to six per person.
Tickets will be available from the Club’s Ticket Office at Griffin Park, which is open from 10am until 4pm Monday to Friday.
They can bought in person or ordered by telephone on 0845 3456 442 – option 4.
They are also available online here.

All tickets in The Bees United Stand and The BIAS Stand will be for allocated seats in order to maximise the potential attendance.
The ‘Pay What You Can’ offer is available for advance tickets only and will not be available in the away end.
If any tickets remain they will be sold on the turnstiles at normal match day prices.

No different to RFC offering Kids for a Quid which could ostracise junior ST holders. Fair play to them for doing this for a game day generally regarded as being one for lower attendances than normal.

Will be interesting to see what their (pre-charity donation, ie total takings) gate receipts are for this game compared to previous home games in the run up to Xmas.

I'd probably pay £15 or so. Perhaps even pay the full whack of £18 knowing half will go to charity.

i got in for free at Oxford v Torquay the other day and would have demanded my money back. Wasn't worth that to be honest.

Have noticed similar schemes being done by indie game developers (see the Humble Indie Bundles) as well as bands (Radiohead if I remember correctly) and whilst the average amount paid tends to be lower than normal rrps it also tends to be high enough for it to be worthwhile.

Personally I hope this takes off.

Tempted to go since Royals are up in Manchester and I've got a few mates down Brentford. I also used to watch Stevenage a lot when I lived there.

Top drinking opportunity as well.

Just got a couple tickets. A bit skint right now so only paid a fiver each. I'll be sure to pop a few quid in the chairty collection on the day and buy a programme.
