melonhead
his hands were tied in relation to spending last summer-if that is the case then Anton and Mr Mad ought to be men enough to take some of the rap.

rap for what?

AZ has put some money in, what he can afford. it was spent spread around the squad on areas that needed it as best as could be expected.
what you want to blame them for is not having enough moneyto spunk 40 million up the wall in one year.
the bastards!

Yawn @ cliche number 1: only way to counter the investment argument is pretend people want Reading to spend no less than 600 godzillion pounds.

said 40 million actually
but thats not the point at all.

surely you all want us to at least spend what QPR, saints have spent
or else how ill we stay up against them.

we had a budget.
the budget was spent.

moaning we should have spent more is irrelevant and pointless

I think you will find thats wrong. Had much bigger budget only BM and Hammond did not want to spend - team ethos etc

I don't have any sources or quotes, but then I'm not saying how much we had or spent either.

Where has he said he spent all his budget? I've not read or heard him say that. I've only heard him say that he got all the players he wanted.

He did say it, which if true makes his dealings in the market even more unforgivable.

How does it make it 'even more unforgivable'?

If he didn't have another penny to spend then there would be an argument that he spent it relatively well (irrespective of how they've turned out since).

And McDermott is well aware that when it comes to attracting big-name players, Reading are still behind most.

"With the budget I have got in comparison to the clubs around us, things are what they are.

"I've spent that budget already, but I know the players I have brought in will do it for me," he said.

"However, you have to consider that teams like Southampton spent £30 million in the summer, and they have got the same amount of points on the board as us.

"We cannot compete with that right now but what we do have is a tremendous team ethic. We are definitely not far away from where we want to be and I have great confidence in everyone at the club, and the fans. We're all in this together."

Team ethic has certainly worked wonders for Reading before, driving them from the crushing disappointment of a play-off final defeat to the Championshp title last year.

And McDermott believes the success is all the more sweeter because of the adversity they have faced.

"I always say that anything worth striving for is hard to achieve. So when you do get what you set out to achieve it makes it that much sweeter," he commented.

"What we did last season really was incredible. Winning the Championship title was not easy but it was that much sweeter because we had lost the play-off final the year before. To come back from that disappointment like we did was fantastic."

Royals will now be looking to bounce back from another disappointment, their cup defeat to Arsenal, at QPR on Sunday.

Zingarevich did not give McDermott an open chequebook after formally completing his takeover in May.

Many Reading fans feel McDermott didn’t do enough to strengthen his squad after their Championship-winning season. He was quick to set the record straight.

Reports suggested owner Anton Zingarevich would be willing to splash the cash on a new team in the transfer window in order to ensure survival but McDermott has sought to clarify the situation.

The money I had I spent,” he said. “Yes, our squad cost a fraction of everyone else’s in the division but that’s where we are.

“There was no massive war chest. Even if we had £10 million to spend in January it doesn’t guarantee you are going to start winning every week

"First and foremost I would never sign 10 players in January," he told Sky Sports News.

"We wouldn't even have the budget to suggest we could sign those players.

"The owner actually said we've been looking at 10 players. Well actually we've been looking at hundreds of different players because that's what we do, scouts go out.

"January to January we'll see what we've got budget-wise and what we can do.

"Anyone who comes in January, they've got to be in a position where they can hit the ground running.

"What I don't want is any mixed messages coming out. I knew what my budget was in the summer and my budget was spent. I'm waiting to see what my budget will be in January.

"There isn't a bundle of money to be spent in January and I think it's important that the fans know that because it isn't the case."

that really is nonssense,#

adressed every problem area in the squad with a mixture of good quality young and hungry championship players, and a little premiere league and INTL experience
on a shoe string.

Because if he did have a limited amount of funds, he would have needed to buy 3 quality players and not 6 squad players to suppliment the squad.

If he pissed away our limited funds then that makes it worse than pissing away some of our many funds.

but that would have left us utterly bereft of cover at left back/right back/CB/striker

if you only buy three, then you havent covered all the gaps in the squad. you can have all the quality you like but if ian harte is first and only choice at left back, and cummings only choice at RB, or only two decent CBs whove played a game then your oxf*rd before you even start.

thats why your argumant makes no sense

Wasting a little money is worse than wasting a lot of money?

I guess this is one of the many reasons why you don't own and run your own football club?

Spot on with the quotes Melonhead.

I don't know where the myth came from that Brian had millions to spend in the summer but decided that he would instead take a few free transfers just for the heck of it.

In my view the club have (rightly in my opinion) taken a risk this season that the team ethic would see us through (like 2006/7) and then we could address things next summer. If we go down we do so with finances intact. If we stay up then great - job done. Either way I think the intention was to keep Brian on whatever.

However, as an outsider looking in it seems that something has gone wrong with the team ethic thing - the Pearce and Guthrie situations are somewhat baffling.

Will the pressure on Anton to do something mean that Brian will be sacked anyway? I hope not but I suspect in the end the many mongs on here calling for Brian’s head will get their way. It is always cheaper to sack the manager than invest and buy in lots of PL standard players. If so it will be a sad day for the club IMO and will almost certainly set us back.

Fair enough, it was a genuine question, I'd not seen that story rehashed all over the place. Do we trust McDermott's version of the truth knowing how he's been a little economical with the truth in the past?

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a bit more scope to play with though, but that's me being cynical about the things I hear from those involved in football.

As with previous windows, if his hands were tied, I'd like to have seen us be a bit more proactive in moving players on to free up space on the wage bill. If we'd got rid of the likes of Church or Tabb then perhaps we'd have been able to bring in a Keith Andrews or Danny Murphy type player to add more Premier League experience to the side.
