If I get a promotion at work and struggle with the additional work, I'd expect my position to come under scrutiny.

EP, I'd disagree that McDermott hasn't had depth of talent to make such changes at times.

This season he's got a raft of similar quality players competing for places, eg Cummings & Gunter or the 4 centre forwards.

They might not be as good as Uniteds options but they are genuine competitors for places in the side so it's not like he's only got Nick Arnold on the bench to replace Gunter if he's having a shocker.

winchester_royal Substitutions also rely on the quality of players you're taking off though.

Yes United have better subs, but they have better players on the pitch to start with too.

I'm with Maffff, there's no way Mcd would ever haul a player off like that.

How do you know, though?

Lacking any kind of evidence (i.e. Brian being in a similar situation) I don't understand what the speculation is based on. It's like saying a vegitarian wouldn't like the taste of bacon.

He's been in similar situations. We've had players all over the shop from the kick off in the past and he's not made an early sub. The only time he'll do it is if there's an injury and he has to.

Mafff and winch are spot on.

Yes they are. Prove otherwise? BM doesn't like to upset the players. He's too nice, and it's one of his biggest downfalls IMO.

Not playing Guthrie because he passes it too much?
Not playing Pearce because he won't sign a new contract?

Obviously Brian thought that Ian Harte was good enough to complete 90 minute horror shows in our biggest game of the season v Swansea in the playoff final and our worst defeat at home against Spurs this season then....

They spoke privately about what was expected of him. He went home unhappy and said too much publicly, then creating a problem that BM otherwise tried to prevent. Brian makes a point of telling the media that he likes to speak to the players and explain his decisions.

Not playing Pearce - well there are rumours that is partly down to Nicky Hammond advising we hold firm regarding our new contract offer. The manager, who here doesn't negotiate contracts remember, will always pick his best players unless there are reasons we are not aware of, so there may be some substance to those rumours.

It's like you've joined in half way through the conversation.

It's not similar, because the subs McD has available are not in the same class as Man U's. He doesn't have the luxury of dragging off one superstar and replacing him with another.

I don't think McD is mastering substitutions right now, but I'm not going to beat him with a sock filled with nothing but fantasy.

The majority of the goals we concede are on our right side or the opponents left wing.
Why didn't McD sign Connolly who proved a good player for us on loan at right back, but could also play CB?
I think we played 5 or 6 games with MC and did not concede a goal.

Extended-Phenotype For a decent stab at 4-5-1 he's going to need Guthrie or Jem back in the mix.

Both i reckon

Leigertwood can then just sit in front of the back 4, passing it 5 yards like he likes to with Karacan and Guthrie ahead of him making the runs and the crossfield balls.

Be tempted to play a striker in a wide position; go two up front when in posession.

But that's a bit Football Manager.
