Alexander Litvinenko But they had no real bids for it - one from Turkey which wasn't suitable, but from other countries only "expressions of interest" which didn't turn into formal bids - like one from Wales & Scotland.

So this is expediency more than anything else, complicated by the expansion to 32 teams - and that's the real :| thing.

Is it not 24 for that one, or are they expanding again?

Rumpole Horrible to travel - you'll have 2 or 3 days notice of where your country is playing. The rush for flights, and thus the inflated prices, is going to be terrible.

Isn't that broadly the case for most tournaments?

Certainly would have been very similar, but not quite on the same scale, for 2012 in Ukraine/Poland and 1994 in the US.

So why don't England bid for it then? Easily cater for 32 teams.

The same people who were being ultra-negative about London 2012 during the 7 years lead-up to it are being negative about this, coming up with all sorts of fanciful scenarios that, in reality, will all be taken into account when the thing is organised.

Hilarious.

It's an excellent idea.

Excellent idea for internet stream mongs like you perhaps, certainly not though for the genuine supporters that intend to go.

I thought Turkey dropped the bid as they're pushing for Instanbul 2020 Olympics.

I agree.

There's no experience in football like going out to a major tournament, taking in the the atmosphere in the country over a week or two, and taking in a few games.

This is all about money, just as the decision to go to 24 teams was.

I'd like to hear those in favour say what they think is better about it.

No experience like it you say. Well yes, for those who can afford it which most cannot, either financially or the time off work.

This means that hundreds of thousands more will get to see games in what is the 2nd biggest tournament in world football.

Can't be a bad thing surely?

It's not that expensive to go to tournaments, and unless you have an amazingly crap job, taking a week or two off isn't beyond most people. It just takes a bit of planning, rather than deciding a month before the tournament starts that you want to go, and finding all the hotels and flights have been booked, and there are no tickets left.

Besides, it not as if having Wembley available will mean England can have 85000 fans there rather than 3000, as the only fair way would be to make sure teams don't play in their own country.

A tournament is about so much more than the individual group games your country plays in, and so much more than just the matches themselves. They'll lose so much character just sold to the highest bidder.

Don't agree with any of that.

Most family men / women couldn't possibly take a week or 2 off work to go and watch a bloody football tournament!

And as for the cost - get real man. You might be able to afford it, but most low earners most certainly could not. This great idea will give people all over Europe a chance to get involved, not just the minority who can 1. use their holiday in this way and 2. can afford the cost of a week or 2 away.

Being affordable for a British person does not make it affordable for a Romanian (for example)

So its going to be even less affordable then for a Romania fan (for example) who has to make 3 different trips for the group games before trying to get travel and hotel at just 3 days notice when the prices will be through the roof.

Spreading the games will just mean more wealthy local neutrals will get to go.

:|

Fans in poorer countries who had no chance of travelling to another country for an international tournament could now afford to see a game if it was in their own country.

How many fixtures in poorer countries do you really expect to see?

Romania (for example) won't play in Romania. The games will be held in neutral venues meaning real fans of the teams involved will struggle to get there and the atmosphere will be pretty shit.

I am aware of that, would be stupid to have it any other way. Point still stands.
