McDermott claiming that he definitely would have been involved tonight but so very easy to say and so difficult to believe after the way McDermott has treated him this season.

cmonurz Not supporting Guthrie refusing to travel - but he has been very poorly treated indeed. In Guthrie's position we'd all been tearing our hair out.

Why he was rubbish when he was playing. What has he done so far to deserve to be first choice. He needed to come off the bench and prove how good he could be - not to refuse to travel.

andrew1957 Danny Guthrie is a disgrace IMO. Cannot blame the manager for a player refusing to travel.

Brian has confirmed on BBCRB so hard to see that he will ever play again for RFC.

It's obvious from Guthries first tweet on saturday hat he was fukked off. Then he back tracked with some about the team. Can't see him playing again under McD now.

RoyalBlue If Sky Sports have reported it then it is likely to be true as they wouldn't risk being sued for libel.

McDermott fails again.

So players should be able to dictate to the manager whether they start or not....?

Problem is, Guthrie has been portrayed on here as some kind of messiah....thing is, nobody on here sees him in training, or, for that matter, saw his 45 mins in the friendly the other week....

McDermott's in a no win situation on that one, best bet is to get rid of Guthrie ASAP...

McDermott should have brought him off the bench against Southampton but didn't do so. He is every bit as much to blame. He signed Guthrie and should have worked out how to handle him and motivate him.

Can't stand all the fuss.

He didn't set the team alight when he played.

He doesn't have the right to demand first team football.

If he refused to travel, then he's the last player you want in a relegation scrap. Flog him in January and put it down to experience. I'm not saying that this side doesn't need a creative midfielder, but if his attitude is that bad then we don't want him. McDermott just confirmed on the radio that Guthrie refused to travel then sent Brian a text to apologise. That's the measure of the man. If he can't apologise in person and has to hide behind a text message, then what would he do on a night like tonight?

Guthrie has gone missing tonight and has let the club down. Ask yourself if you want that type of player at the club, let alone in the middle of the pitch in a relegation scrap.

And if you think that it's poor man management, then I can only assume that you've never managed anybody. I've managed plenty of people who have had to put up with some crap at work through no fault of their own and the ones who succeed and have gone on to bigger things are the ones who get their heads down and deal with it. The ones who cried about it ended up miserable and going nowhere.

Guthrie's Twitter account says he's a professional footballer. There's nothing professional about him.

He was not rubbish.

But the point is moot. Seems you see our players as little more than contracted slaves. Guthrie has been frozen out for voicing an opinion, and then sat watching from the bench as we get totally over-run in midfield. Add to that a couple of good performances against Stoke and Chelsea (he only started four games in total) and there hasn't been much reason not to consider playing Guthrie.

To be signed and then told you won't be picked because your natural game is wrong for the club must have been gutting for him.

I've no doubt he has trained but feels he just won't get a chance under McDermott. Awful man management.

McDermott's ego ensured that didn't happen.

Having another strop is near unforgivable.

Sure, McD is not handling the situation well, but that is no excuse.

Guthrie has been turgid for us, and him coming in is not going to turn our season around.

He is not the MESSIAH. Dom Samz is.

It's bad on both parts - McD should have selected him when it's so glaringly obvious that our midfield is poor, however you have to respect your managers decision and attempt to prove him wrong. If he travelled tonight, didnt play and we lost, he would have some more credibility and we can all say McD is sh1te instead of slightly agreeing with him against a stroppy player

I don't give a toss for Guthries reasons why he wont travel - its an utter disgrace and I dont want players who behave like this playing for my club.

Clearly he's trying to engineer a way out...someone please show him the door.

Would have done exactly the same in Guthrie's position.

The guy's a human being, with a family, at what should be the peak of his career, and he is getting fcked about by a manager who refuses to play him ahead of two shockingly average footballers.

Don't give me all this 'professional' crap. There have been no problems with him at any other club. This is a man-management failure from the promises made when he signed in the summer that has carried on throughout the season. Footballer's aren't machines, they are like employees at any other firm, and if any of us had been treated like this by our superiors we'd all be pulling sickies too (regardless of our pay packet).

And now McDermott is trying to take the heat off himself by airing something that should be kept in-house. Pathetic.

Agree to an extent but McDermott proved time and time again he wasn't prepared to play him, even when the game v Saints was crying out for him. Just how long was he expected to sit it out?
