Statistically teams that are 2nd from bottom at this stage of the season survive the drop 53% of the time. So the odds are in your favour.

January transfer window is massive for Reading this year. They need to utilise it well. No 'decent' player will want to commit to a full time contract with Reading due to their current league position. However, a couple of decent loans signings will boost the club and the fans.

It's time to get in Florent Malouda, Andre Arshavin and Michael Dawson. If Reading stay up, they can then look to signing them on a permanent basis.

The greatest comeback since Lazarus?

by 68biscuitmen » 12 Dec 2012 12:13

It's the season for miracles but there will be no comeback of Lazarus proportions unless:
1. Madejski stops talking about Reading "overachieving" and "If you notice the results, none have been overwhelming defeats. They have been near misses most of the time". "We are punching way above our level. You have to remember Southampton spent £30m in the summer, so let's get real". Amazingly, at least publicly, Madejski still believes you can survive in the Prem League spending as little as possible on players. Real naivety for such a successful businessman. If Zingaravich also thinks the same then no matter which manager is in charge we are only heading one way.......down.
2. Reading invest at least £20m on 5 or 6 players in January. Radical surgery is required which requires spending big money. That's a simple fact of life if you want to compete in the Premier League. If we just invest in 1 or 2 players who will fit into the "Reading way" then no matter who they are it won't be enough. At least half the "overachieving" team are undoubtedly now way out of their depth at this level.
3. Zingaravich should show some real leadership now and make public statements that he will not sit idly by and let Reading go down without putting up a real fight. In his case that means getting his big cheque book out and spending some of his or his dads billions. Make that statement now so that us fans can hang onto some hope that we will not just go down with a whimper, having learned nothing from our mistakes under-investing in players the last time. Better late than never. If he isn't prepared to take the risk and spend big then he shouldn't be the owner of a premier league club and in fact he won't be by next May.......

p.s. if anyone of the we hate newbie's persuasion wants to have a go it's your right of course but whilst I am a newbie on this site I have been following Reading home and away since my first game standing on the South Bank in 1968 and I have spent many thousands travelling up and down the country supporting the team I love...........

Big Ern Despite what Brian says, this season squatting in the Premiership could cause us far more harm that good in the medium to short term and it is not a good time to be a reading Supporter.

I don't post on here so often, but this shit sandwich that we are all savouring at the moment has inspired me to get involved.

In the context of Brian's reign here, he has had maybe six months where he hasn't performed. H has never managed in the prem before, but has shown over the entire time that he has been here that he is able to learn and improve depending on the circumstances. He has proved that he can manage n the champ.

If we go down, we will go down with a squad that is proven at that level, with a manger proven at that level, and playing on an uneven playing field slanted in our favor.

Why the rush to get rid?

First of all f**k off newbie. Why does SJM keep saying we are over achieving? Look at Norwich and Swansea they are over achieving. Have they spent millions? No they have good managers and players and a style that allows them to keep the ball for long periods without giving it away cheaply.

Because despite the results (or lack thereof) we're utterly horrible to watch and have been for well over a year?

Arrange for Wigan, Sunderland, Villa, PPI, Southampton and Newcastle to be bought by Peter Ridsdale?

Now multiply it by our propensity to spend money.

F8ck off newbie! We may well have stood near to each other on the South Bank in 1968!

I agree with an awful lot of what you say. However, there has now been an overwhelming defeat as a consequence of a thoroughly unacceptable performance by players and management last night. Far from improving, things are now getting dramatically worse.

I agree. I was just quoting Madejski saying before the Sunderland game that we had not suffered "overwhelming defeats". Well he won't be saying that now and hopefully he won't be saying that we will carry on the Reading way or indeed that BM is doing an amazing job. BM was doing an amazing job but not anymore and the Reading way isn't working at this level, so take a risk and spend big now or we know what happens if we don't...

Comeback starts at home to Arsenal on Monday.

If we're gonna beat them, now is the time!
