Don't think so. They were in the Prem until the mid 90s - Joe Royle etc... - then had a couple of seasons in the second flight and have been in the third flight, i.e. 3rd Div/League Div 2/League 1 since then but not fallen down to the fourth flight.

Luton Town went from the top flight to the fourth flight in ten years from 1992 to 2002. And then out of the FL 8 years later.

I believe they did. Joe Mercer said the great football achievment of 66 was not England winning the world cup but Northampton reaching the 1st division. They then went straight back down to div 4!

Bristol City certainly had 3 consecutive relegations and that was down to woeful financial mismanagement, signing players to 5 year contracts on some of the highest wages in the country.

I think Swansea and Wolves did it in 4 seasons. Luton went 2nd tier to non league in about 5.

Why would financial mismanagement cause their relegation ?
They didn't get any points deductions.

Their administration was caused by their relegation combined with the long contracts - not the other way round.

We argue over semantics. Signing shit players was a factor in them falling out of the top flight but not being able to shift these players because of their contracts was a factor in their subsequent freefall down the league and administration. I would have thought that was a sign of financial mismanagement,

Some of the signings they made would be akin to us signing Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell on £120,000 p/w guaranteed for 5 years.

Bristol City were actually liquidated in 1982 and basically did a Rangers. All their best players (and top earners) had to agree to terminate their contracts to save what was left of the club so that the new club could start a fresh without the wage bill. If they hadn't Bristol City would have been expelled from the league. So yes, their freefall down the leagues was as a result of financial mismanagment, not the other way around.

Clubs that go into Admin suffer a lot more from their own self harming than they do from the miserley 10 points they get deducted. Bradford went through the leagues without any points being deducted and you could say they are still suffering now.

Bristol City were the 1st club to go from Div 1 to Div 4 in 3 years, I think Wolves are the only other team to do it. Northampton and Swansea did it in 4.

The 10 point deduction was confirmed yesterday once the transfer of ownership goes through. That pretty much condemns them to League 2.

Pompey's points deduction had been suspended but the league confirmed it will still be applied while also adding there will be further punishments against the club such as "restrictions on playing budgets and future borrowing for the next four seasons."

Good! But what are the penalties if they break these restrictions?

I do wonder if all the pledges will in fact become reality for the Trust.

I really hope so as it would be fantastic for fan ownership to also be a practical reality.

Hopefully they will at least get a critical mass of the pledges allowing any shortfall to be met by attracting relatively wealthy local backers to pitch in any difference.

Cannot see many people buying into a league 2 club so fan ownership will soon be the only real option. Averaging 12k at the moment when every fan of theirs knows the club needs every penny.

And why should people put good money into a dead club? Better to keep it until the new one starts up wouldn't you say?
