I thought the problem was that Southampton have spent £30m and us next to nothing.

Let's get this right, some of you will spout any kind of nonsense to justify your point of view when, in reality, the only thing that would make a one season stop in the top flight a disaster for a tight fisted club ours would be to throw the man who got us there too soon out with the bath water.........................the parachute payments used wisely could be our chance to become the next West Brom.

My main criticism of Reading is the coaching from the very bottom of the club to the top. When you are a club who don't have much money to spend, then grass routes/Academy is key.

There seems to be a philosophy around the club with either players who have come up through the ranks, or players brought in are try hards. Most have the correct attitude, hunger and desire. However, more emphasis needs to put on technical ability. This I believe, is where Reading fall down quite badly. The game is getting more technical these days and Reading need to evolve with the times. Imo, they're standing still, in terms of the players they sign and the academy players making the first team.

Wish Bryn gunnarsson was 8 years younger, would transform the centre mid with his all round display!

or maybe his leadership now could do a job until January?

With the pace of Harte and Gunnarsson we could go far. Albeit slowly

+1 for giving Bryn a run out instead of Legs. He may not have any pace, but he won't deliver gift-wrapped chances to the opposition.

LOL at putting in Gmac over Kebe. McCleary has been useless this season, and yet idiots refuse to see it because of a fancy trick or two.

The fact is, whilst you have Madejski within 150 miles of this club we will never survive in the Premiership (Reading way  ). Someone give him an ASBO

I think, maybe we are looking at accumulating the necessary points tally in the wrong way.

We have just lost 5 on the bounce and are only 6 points from safety.

First, as someone has already posted, we have our relegation rivals at the MadStad.
We have to win at least 3 of these, probably all 5, and if we can win those games
(just talking about 5 wins here) we are on 24, and looking for 10-20 points from
17 games. Take out the presumed losses to Arsenal, Man C, Man U, 12 games.

Those wins (against relegation rivals) move us at least 3 points closer, and bring us to
a slightly advantageous Goal Difference. IF we can get those wins all we need is a steady
ship, say 12+ points from those other 12 games (total 36) and hope that our rivals take
points of each other in crappy 0-0s.

It's certainly still possible, but now, because we blew the away games, we HAVE to win the big five.

And we have Karacan and Morrison to come back in, maybe a return to form for Gorkss and Elwood,
possibly Guthrie and the Pog (both known decent Prem players), and Pearce playing, maybe even Kebe
and 2-3-4 possibles in January.

I wouldn't bet on us staying up, but the margins are narrow.

We lost to late goals at Wigan and Villa. Had those been draws...

16 16 -10 15 Southampton
17 16 -12 13 Aston Villa
18 16 -14 13 Wigan
19 16 -10 11 Reading
20 16 -16 07 QPR

We deserved to lose at Southampton, but again it was a single goal. Had that been "a lucky 0-0" it would be

16 16 -11 13 Southampton
17 16 -12 13 Aston Villa
18 16 -14 13 Wigan
19 16 -09 12 Reading
20 16 -16 07 QPR

Possibly sooner rather than later I would think. After his massive financial 'hit' with his print business going broke recently, prior to that the Station Hill redevelopment hitting the buffers and him having to sell other buinesses to bail out the failing traffic managment company his 49% share of RFC is possibly his most valuble asset now.

Of course that 49% would be worth much more if the club did not get relegated.

is there room for an argument that says we don't really deserve to be here in the first place?

i loved last season. finishing top of the champo was great but, lets face it, it was implausible. this wasn't just because of the first half of the season but also because, even during the momentous run after christmas, we looked beatable more often than not. if we rode our luck last season then that horse is now surely dead and this turgid, unimaginative display is comeuppance for that. we fluked the prem through hard work and tenacity rather than skill, what we needed was a concerted summer effort to capitalise on that good fortune involving a big transfer kitty, wisely invested on players who could keep us here. that didn't happen..at all. hence here we are. i'd love to say i was surprised but when jay tabb and mikele leigertwood are your starting central mids in the prem you're asking for it.
