Hope BM sticks with the same team and formation for Spurs. The back 4 were all good today, even Gunter. I thought Guthrie sat too deep which is fine in defence but he was still too deep or too far from Pog in attack. He needs to stop going deep looking for the ball which iirc was the reason BM dropped at the begiining of the season.

Feds 8. Did everything asked of him inc the 2 regulation camera saves.
Gunter 7. Best game for Reading, although kebe helped him out 1st half
Pearce 8. MOM. Immense and has steadied the back 4. Did well to keep his cool against Cole and Nolan.
Mariappa 7. As with Gunter, best game in a Reading shirt. Showed his speed and ability to read the game.
Harte 7. Solid with some good blocks without being spectacular. Pace was never a concern with their tactics. Together with Pearce has brought stability to the back 4.
Ledge 6. Tried harder but still making too many mistakes. His strength looked key defending set pieces which could keep Tabb out.
Karacan 8. Everywhere. End of.
Kebe 8. Survived being targetted and after 30 seconds he knew they were after him. Coped well but ruined some great mazy runs with no final pass.
Guthrie 6. Looks comfortable on the ball but sat far too deep and left Pog too exposed. If Pog is fukked tonight, its Guthrie's fault.
Pog 8. Again, best game in a Reading shirt. Ran all day and didn't give up, with more support going forward he could look even better.
Hunt 8. Did everything asked of him and did it very well.

Thoughts on the game; had the atmosphere of a genuine local derby and totally unlike anything else this season - a real edge to the day. A hilarious mistake from Collins, and a great finish from Pog. Disciplined performance by the team with stand out displays by Pearce, Kebe and MOTM Karacan. What happened to the West Ham "we play it on the ground" chant? Their ONLY tactic was to hoof it long to Cole and hope that they get something off the scraps - dreadful dull and oh so typically BFS. As for Cole, well, he should have gone for an elbow to Pearce in the first half, or the kick on Gunter in the 2nd; he may also have stamped on Gunter later in the 2nd - hopefully he will get a 3 match ban on Monday.

Karacan's great shot was well saved onto the bar, whilst Vaz Te's miss was truly awful and equally funny.

As stated after the Swansea match, we have become harder to beat with the new formation, and though it was ugly and gritty, its 3 points, and only 1 goal conceded in 3 games. Big call by Brian to bring on NHunt and to go 442, and it worked.

Still a long way to go to achieve safety, but if we carry on as we have done the last 3 games we have a chance...

Why do they give a shit about us? We're little old Reading, they are massive West Ham United, yet they still haven't won anything in yonks and still get turned over by smaller, 'muggier' teams such as ourselves.

Well well well. Brian's pulled his finger out, West Ham are as generous as ever and a narrowly deserved win.

Federici - 8 MotM some really important saves and claims. Kicking was poor today, but you can't have everything.
Gunter - 6.5 we still look a little exposed down the flanks, but he got forward well when he could and didn't defend too shabbily
Harte - 6 miss jumped on two occasions letting them in, plus beaten for pace on at least one other. Don't know why Shorey was dropped for him really.
Pearce - 6.5 good play. Needs to learn to head the ball clear to a blue and white shirt.
Mariappa - 6.5 covered Harte well but also needs to learn to head clear to a blue and white shirt
Karacan - 7 beavered away brilliantly, though arsed up at least one attack with his tunnel vision. Covers more ground quicker than Tabb can so helps cover the fact that our midfield gets pulled all over the shop too often.
Guthrie - 6.5 pretty good alround game I thought, although I found it difficult to pick him out from my seat, so I'm staying fairly conservative. Surprised he was subbed over Legs.
Leigertwood - 4 I actually started counting the number of successful passes he made after 10 minutes of the second half. I got as high as three, two of which were backwards. I understand this was one of his better games. He did at least give Cole a hard time when he drifted deep. Tabb please, even if it leaves us bereft of height in the middle.
Kebe - 8 despite some silly challenges that gave away freekicks and a run where he held the ball too long I thought he was excellent defensively, helping out Gunter and even playing right back for a while. And he worried West Ham going forward and caused them to play stupidly.
McAnuff - 6 another quiet game by his earlier season standards. Some good runs that didn't really come off. The shot that hit the bar was from a lay off from him and he was in the build up to our gift of a goal from Collins.
Pogrebnyak - 7.5 worked tirelessly, feeding off scraps and took the one real chance that came to him. Surprised he wasn't subbed to save his legs. Not a great lone striker, but probably the best we've got, unless ALF gets a chance there and is a revelation.

HRK - 7 can't really defend, but made up for it by keeping the ball in their half when he came on. Nearly scored I think.
Hunt - 6.5 busy busy busy. Helped keep the ball in the corner, not a lot else.

McDermott - 7 finally realised we need to build from the back, yes we'll struggle to score now, but draws are better than losing 3-4 and we'll hopefully nick the odd game now and then.

Ref - 5 blew soft freekicks for them frequently and gave us not a lot similar. Missed several nasty fouls from West Ham, Cole in particular. Nice to see the West Ham fans showing their class and supporting a dirty cheating thug proudly.

This really came at the right time. West Ham are a team we could feel relatively confident against given our record against them and the games last season. Off the back of a good performance and nearly result, with a creditably draw, this win could do our confidence the world of good. If we can build on this with a draw against Spurs, we migh *might* just manage to stay up, though I think it'll more likely be a case of just putting up a reasonable fight of it before going down.

McDermott has now done enough of a turnaround from where we were after Sunderland to convince me we may as well stick with him now. The lesson he seems to have learnt was a oxf*rd long time coming though.

Delighted to hear Bill Oddie coming across loud and clear from the East Stand.

Frustrating game from my point of view, neither team played too well but, a mistake made and you punished us. That's how teams battle out the hard and scrappy games, something we failed to do. Well done chaps.

Nice to see Kebe winding them up again, for no other reason than being the man himself. Didn't do a lot today but defended admirably.

Still probably too late to save the season but the odd highlight like today makes the rest of the season a little less painful.

By the way a pretty awful game by two terrible sides. One of which wanted it more than the other!
