Excited about this but would like to see him play well first before saying he's a good signing..

Take a look at the Sporting forum (used chrome so it translated it) - http://www.forumscp.com/index.php?topic=3914.8520

They seem to really rate this guy and are not happy in the least that he has gone, and for so little. Seems he fell down the pecking order there and is a victim of the financial difficulties Sporting seem to be having.

Some Southampton fan pops up half way through and gives us a slagging, and one or two have questioned why he hasn't gone to a much higher club than us. Some of the translations are comical, but you get the drift.

Credit to the club for moving quickly on this one - Benfica were genuinely interested in him, but BcMD and co have sold him the challenge of staying up, and he seems up for it. Impressed.

A very good signing. Thankfully, we must have someone to replace Ledge.

Very, very happy with this. Tremendous work by the Reading staff.

I agree we should pull back from getting over-excited before we even see him play though. This guy is pretty much the Pearce of Sporting, hasn't played mainly due to his contractual situation being 'unfair', but does seem a very good player. How quite 'little old Reading' got him baffles me.

Also, agree with posts above that the club seem to be hinting he will play as a defensive midfielder (Brian finally being able to replace Legs?). Only started playing there recently. I think the fact he's been out of Sporting for most of the season means he might take even a few weeks to get up to scratch

How do you pronounce Carrico? I'd guess at Ca-ree-sho?

This is what Forvo says:

And that's what I had in my mind before listening to it.

He has come to the club as a defensive midfielder that can pass the ball. Exactly what we needed. He is not here to score goals. If we can add a creative midfielder, we would be capable of getting a run together.

Excited with this signing :D

I can't express how happy I am with this signing. Sporting Lisbon's 24 year-old captain who can play either CB or DM, and has Champions League experience? And clubs like Man Utd, City and Chelsea have shown interest in him in the recent past? And he is coming here?

Great bit of business this...

At the risk of upsetting Ian Harte...

Promising signing but do have to worry about why he's come to Reading if he's so highly thought of.

To go from a £15m defensive prospect being watched by Real Madrid, Man Utd and City to a holding midfielder signed by a bottom of the league side for £500k inside 2 years is a bit of a fall from grace.

Obviously teams miss talent and stock falls all of the time, but it certainly seems a gamble rather than bringing in an established talent which is what we need to be aiming for. With around an hours football all season it would be surprising to see him much this month.

The last Portuguese midfielder/defender we brought in was also pretty pants and he cost more

Anyway, hopefully it's another Long/Doyle/Shorey rather than a Cisse/Halford/Sheppard... Also few can be as bad as Ledge right now!

Some more detailed thoughts here.

I don't mean to Morrison on the parade here, but weren't we all mad excited over our summer signings at the time, then spent the following months bemoaning them? nonetheless, he sounds aweeeeeeesome, especially excited to see how/where he'll slot in :D

My good friend in Portugal supports this club we bought him from, he says the fans are gutted he's gone but the club badly need the finance's.

Great purchase, bargain, looking forward to seeing him play, well done Reading.

Carrico "It is with mixed emotions that I write this farewell message," it read. "I'm leaving the club of my heart, where I had the privilege of graduating through the youth ranks and serving for several years.
"I'm leaving because I understand that I am at a stage in my career when I have to take chances. Moreover, the proposed project is extremely exciting to me and know I can succeed."D

Interesting.
