pwb Don't forget back in Jan 2012 we signed Jason Roberts, who also hadn't played much for Blackburn due to contract issue. We all know what happened next!!

WE'RE GOING TO WIN THE LEAGUE!!!! GET IN!!

On a serious note, however, just read the following sentence slowly and really spend some time taking it in:

'Reading FC have just signed the club captain of Sporting Lisbon' 8)

I know that he is not match fit and we haven't seen if he is up to the rigours of PL football, but the guy has come from one of the bigger clubs in Portugal (albeit having a bad season) has played in the champions league, and he is not past his best and just taking the money.

I am very excited by this signing and it makes me happy!

It's just a shame we'll have to sell him in June/July

That may well happen, but there is a lot of football to be played between now and then.
Some people think we are doomed already, some think we have a chance of staying up. I never bother trying to be clever or a pundit, as if any of us were that good at it, we would be working in football. I am a fully paid up member of the fence sitters club and just enjoy the ride.....and with football you just never know....

At least the club are making some moves. Only time will tell if he is any good for us, but the base from which he starts his RFC career is significantly higher than if we had signed someone none of us had heard of from Ireland or a 'big name' from League One.

None of us knows how he will turn out, every signing is a gamble, etc. etc. but for a club like us, this is a good signing in my humble (unqualified) opinion.
I wish him every success, as that may translate into success for RFC.

Seems an excellent signing; lets hope he's taking Legeirtwood's place in the team and not paving the way for Pearce's departure.

Quietly optimistic. Decent experience for a relatively young player, versatile and good technical ability. At £600,000, could be an absolute bargain. Whilst he is out of contract in the summer, can we also assume Hammond has been up to his old hard bargaining tricks again, using Sporting's financial difficulties as leverage?

I'd say this signing has our new head scout written all over it, little old Reading would have never of tried such an audacious approach before.

Good point, has the feel of a Fulham-esque signing. No problems with that.

Wimb At the risk of upsetting Ian Harte...

Promising signing but do have to worry about why he's come to Reading if he's so highly thought of.

To go from a £15m defensive prospect being watched by Real Madrid, Man Utd and City to a holding midfielder signed by a bottom of the league side for £500k inside 2 years is a bit of a fall from grace.

Obviously teams miss talent and stock falls all of the time, but it certainly seems a gamble rather than bringing in an established talent which is what we need to be aiming for. With around an hours football all season it would be surprising to see him much this month.

The last Portuguese midfielder/defender we brought in was also pretty pants and he cost more

Anyway, hopefully it's another Long/Doyle/Shorey rather than a Cisse/Halford/Sheppard... Also few can be as bad as Ledge right now!

Some more detailed thoughts here.

http://www.thetilehurstend.com/2012/12/ ... el-carrico

That's the bit that really worries me... defenders come midfielders make me nervous and think they just aren't good enough at either position.

Still, everything else about the guy is positive so pleased to see we've made a positive step quickly and I hope we see him perform well and quickly.

Libertine It is just bothering the people who are worried he might actually help us stay in the PL...

Quite. If I 'd written some of the cr@p posted on here that had us relegated 2 months ago, 2 wins on the bounce would have me bricking it :P

Air on the side of caution. You were all 'delighted' with the signings of Gunter etc in the Summer. :|

it's "Err", cos that makes sense and "Air" doesn't in the slightest.

SPARTA

^ Formerly TransferMarketFeed who have a decent record on transfers. Their new website - http://www.thefootballfamily.com/home/

Interesting one and on a free. Sounds a bit more likely than some of these rumours, and he was also linked with Fulham a while back, so us pinching their chief scout and then this might add up.

Daniel Carriço
Born: August 4, 1988 (age 24), Cascais
Height: 1.81m
Position: Central Defender

It seems Reading or Benfica are the two leading clubs in for him at the moment.

Is there a nobber behind that website?

Yes, and @ReadingFC__News who were also all over that one, though they don't do the ITK thing, they just gather all Reading related news and rumours in one place. Both worth a follow.

On the home page of the BBC, well done little Reading! Definitely a sign of intent.

Hope he will prove to be a great signing.

You don't need to apologise. This is a football forum not an English exam

Let me add to that the Pog, as I recall I was the only one who said calm down he doesn't look anything like an immediate hit whilst the board was orgasming over him.

Hopefully the Pog is coming good with time and hopefully Carico will too. It may be too late for this season.

However, the likes of Butler, Roberts, Cureton, Robinson, all made immediate impacts so who knows.
