Well I for one am baffled. One the hand McD spouts on about the desire to bring in 2 or 3 players of proven premier league experience, yet on the other, he buys a CD/CDM player from Portugal who has played twice this season in the Portuguese League, and is about to sign a 20 year old Aussie who only made his professional debut (in Oz ffotball), in January this year.

Presimably themn, we can still expect another "2 or 3 players of proven premier league experience" to be brought in, or are these 2 in place of the aforementioned? Frankly, I can;lt see how these two could be thrown straight into the team - surely a degree of acclimatisation/fitness build-up/learning the RFC way will be needed before they can sensibly be asked to rescue our season?

All seems very muddled and "fingers crossed" management - unless of course the cunning plan is to accpet relegation this season and build for a promotiuon season next?

Obviously judgement reserved until February 1st, but initial thoughts are, as I say, very muddled!

Agreed strap, especially as some reports say we've also tied up a deal for this Zambian centre half Sunzu as well.

melonhead heard brian say he was versatile and could play in 3 positions.
slightly worried if hes for CDM- portuguese bloke on talk sport said that was not his best position, as he isnt good enough on the ball.

Without being too harsh on them I'd say it's pretty unlikely that he's any worse on the ball than Karacan, Tabb or Leigertwood.

Fans need to hold fire on their thoughts on this signing, as this is more a long term one, which won't affect this season. He will take too long to acquire match fitness and have a major impact on this season.

IF Reading have ANY ambition on staying up this season, they need to bring in two or three decent loan signings, such as Huddlestone and Asharvin. If they're just bringing in Carrico and this Aussie guy, then they are planning for life back in the Championship.

he did also say that the club would find it very hard to bring in those sorts of players due to our history/current position.

Plus it's only 2nd January! Plenty of time for the meltdown to occur.

Still in 2012 clearly! Yes, debut was in January 2012, and that was only A-League, so not exactly at PL standard..

"There was talk of Manchester United taking a look at him very seriously a couple of years ago, and fees of £20 million were quoted. This is obviously a great opportunity for Reading - I think it’ll work out really well for them, it’s an extraordinary bargain – they say there’s no value in January, but it could turn out to be an incredible signing. It’s great for the player too."

Royal Rother
Big Ern Also, if he was so cheap and being monitored by the likes of Citeh and Man United, why didn't someone else go for him?

RFC fans' inferiority complex lives on.

Valid point actually. If the likes of Barca and the above mentioned clubs were 'linked' to him, I would have expexcted him, like most rational people to questionwhy he didn't get an offer from a bigger club than us.

You may not like to hear it, but there are actually bigger clubs in the world than Reading FC.

Presumably there aren't many other clubs in a position to offer him first team football for whom it also makes sense to gamble on a player like this.

this is what got me excited about carrico to begin with, the fact that both manchester clubs were looking at him as well as a few other big name clubs. what worries me is that they didnt go in for him which means that he must have had some fatal flaw in him that made them not want him. on the other hand if he is almost good enough for united then surely he is still higher class than most of our team!

Whilst I agree with the comments about the 2-3 PL players we said we needed, what's to say we wont be trying to get them as well as Carriço and Skippy?

It wont work out like that because Brian can't get much right this season, but let's cling to the hope anyway.

We want two or maybe three players plus Daniel. We’ll see, you know what January is like

Big clubs look at lots of players and it doesn't lead anywhere. Didn't James Lambert have a trial at Monaco all those years ago?

I'm going to lay my cards down now; I bet this lad is worth every penny of what we paid for him and not much more. He'll make a few appearances as sub and a couple of starts but won't do much else.

If he saves our season or is any sort of revelation then please return to this post and tell me how wrong I was. I will be glad to hear it.

But then it doesn't seem to stop QPR and Soton trying to do the same?!

Really helping them isn't it. One below us, one outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

We see it time and again, that in the long run, unsustainable overspending on wages in particular and transfer fees as well just leads to financial trouble 2, 5 or 10 years down the line. Those teams mostly recover, but they have pretty shit periods because of it see Pompey, Leeds, Forest, Sheff Utd, Leicester, Saints, Coventry, Palace etc etc. Sooner or later one of them isn't going to be able to even partially recover and will go out of the league or out of business.

We saw what our underspending did to us in 2008. It still left us in a very difficult financial position and that was despite being one of the lower spenders. And at the end of the day three teams get relegated regardless of how much they've spent and we've seen that spending big does not guarantee you survival long-term. Eventually you'll get caught out and be in real trouble.

Listening to final score and that Andy Brassell guy, claiming he was an absolute steal and that Lisbon are in free fall.

basically implying we are a stepping stone!
